XLR mic PLUS onboard mic for ambient sound?

Can the DVX100A accept input from an XLR mic PLUS the onboard mic? If so, what happens to the stereo signal of the onboard mic? Thanks!

Channel 1 can be internal and Channel 2 can be XLR (or vice versa). Stereo: out the window.

The stereo mic records the left channel on channel 1 and the right channel on channel 2. So if you choose to plug in an external mic to one of the inputs, you will lose that side of the stereo mic's signal.

For example, if you plug in a mic to channel 2, and set channel 1 to INT, then the LEFT side of the on-board mic will get recorded to channel 1.

If instead you wanted the right side of the on-board mic to get recorded, you'd have to plug your external mic into channel 1 and set channel 2 to INT.

Great! Thanks for the tips. I tried this on a DVX100A and there was a lot of noise from the auto-focus mechanism, and of course the servo-zoom. Is that auto-focus noise normal for this camera?

Yep.

The onboard mics are last-resort things.

Like if the aliens land in the backyard and you don't have time to set up an external mic.
