XLR cord - advice needed

Barry Green mentioned in passing in one or more threads about making sure we use a particular type of XLR cord. Until now, I thought the only types were long, medium and short :-).

Please let us know about the different types. I'll be getting a short one soon with a new mic purchase, and don't want to get the wrong kind.

Hi Magic, you can get them in:

18", 3', 6', 10', 15', 25', 50', and 100'. There are also longer runs. Comprehensive makes very high quality cables, but they are also more expensive. Audio Technica cables are cheaper, but we don't have them in short lengths under 10'.

You can goto our site and search for "XLRPXLRJ" and that will show all the cables.

Re: XLR cord - advice needed

Yes, but it seems there was something else about the cords besides length that was important, unless I misunderstood. Maybe tonight, I'll try to find that comment in this section.

Re: XLR cord - advice needed

Yeah, hmm, I don't remember saying anything about a particular type of cable (other than it not being some cheap piece of garbage from some ebay vendor)... AT makes good cables for the price, and there are others. But if you find whatever that comment was, post it and I'll try to remember and clarify whatever it was I may have meant!

Re: XLR cord - advice needed

I wonder if you were thinking about a right-angle XLR connector on the end of the cable for plugging into your DVX?

Re: XLR cord - advice needed

I took a quick look back last night to find the comment. It'll require more digging, though, which I can't do for a couple of days.

Based on your response, Barry, maybe it wasn't you, or maybe it was you or someone else and I misinterpreted the remark. It's bugging me so I'll find it when I get a chance.

Re: XLR cord - advice needed

You may be referring to female and male connectors...some have different setups, like a female to female XLR. Is this the 'type' of cord?

As long as we're on the subject of XLR cables - what about those really expensive Monster cables? Saw some in a music store the other day, with some pretty amazing claims on the packaging. Are they really that good? Under what conditions are they worth the additional cost?

Re: XLR cord - advice needed

From what I've experienced, the end viewer is never going to know the difference if you use 300$ platinum or gold monster interconnects, or 40$ AT cables. Monster cables "supposedly" make a difference in high end audiophile quality listening environments, but I think (imho) if you secretly switched them, the owner wouldn't know the difference. They do have good shielding to block out interference though...

Re: XLR cord - advice needed

Tonight, I spent over half an hour tracking down a comment I thought Barry Green made about types of XLR cords, but to no avail. Maybe I dreamt it, or maybe I was drunk (which would be really weird because I don't drink).

I have a Peavy sound system for my other sideline (magic - hence the screen name), so I know most of the audio basics, e.g., male female XLRs etc. But for some reason, I thought I read something about certain types of cords.

Well, if Barry is puzzled, then I don't need to worry about buying a cord, do I? Just get the length I need from my local music store, right?

I think maybe Ib en spenning to muc time on dis websait and nead a resst? Im prolly gettin deleriosuoiusious . . .

Re: XLR cord - advice needed

No, just get regular high-quality 3-pin M/F XLR cords from any audio/music store, etc. Just don't buy cheap junk, that's all...

Re: XLR cord - advice needed

magic, i just purchased 1.5' canare star quad xlr cable w/ neutrik gold connectors over at markertek.com. the best audio cable around.

Re: XLR cord - advice needed

I wonder why it is that only consumers buy these gold connector cables?

I've never seen one at a production facility or television station.

Re: XLR cord - advice needed

..well the reliability of the cable is only as good as its worst conducting component, which would be the material the cable is made of ...espescially due to the length of that component of the cable. the cable wont transmit any better simply becuase it has gold connections. like if i stuck gold on the ends of a broomstick, it would still suck as an audio cable, but the advantage that the gold has is that most junk introduced to an electric circuit is in the connections between components, so the gold connectors offers a higher quiality connection..even if only one of the connecting ends is gold. studios dont usually buy them cause they are more expensive, and really offer little advantage over the high quality cables and connectors they already use, whereas a lousy consumer grade cable has alot to gain by stepping up to a higher quality cable.

:P

lol.. :) no i was just giving an overly abundant answer to a somewhat rhetorical question.. it was supposed to be sort of an informative joke. i guess i thought is was anyway.. dont mind me. i dont know what planet that would be funny on.. anyway somtimes you just start thinking some things that dont make sense, and well .. this was one of those times. i thought the tounge out smiley made it make sense somehow as being just for craziness.. man thats stupid... oh well. but no i didnt take any offense or anything. lolol.. now im just laughing at how dumb that idea was. wow.. glad i didnt make a film about it.. :)
