XLR cables?

Hey everyone.

I'm looking for a good XLR cable that isn't as expensive as Canare. Around 15 feet long that would connect an Azden SGM-1X to a DVX100B straight into the camera (no mixer).

Also, Does anyone know where to look for a real small XLR that would connect from the DVX to the mic that would be on the mic holder in the camera and not a boompole? I'm guessing it would be less than a foot long.

Thanks. :dankk2:

Don't have any suggestion beyond Canare. The couple extra bucks is more then worth it. I would suggest you consider far more then 15 feet; 25 as a minimum.

Average pole-10'
Distance to floor-6'
Distance to camera-assume at least 10'
Extra for slack-at least a few feet.

If you plan on only buying one cable definitely go way over 25' to cover all possibilities. Better to have slack to wrangle then to come up short.

You can pick up a 1 footer at any audio/video dealer.

Cheers

For the one-footer, tell you vendor of things audio that you want an XLR pigtail. They're very common as an limp extender between a mic and an XLR connector molded into the base of the shockmount at the top of a boompole.

Go with Canare... Markertek has good prices on Canare cables. If you look at those and still think they're too expensive then you need to change how you think about cables... they're pretty cheap from Markertek.

The price difference for the good stuff is so insignifigant that it seems to me to be false economy to shop based on price. Why would you spend $250-$500 on the mic, $2500 on a camera and then worry about saving $10 on the cable to connect them together. Sorry, but just makes no sense. Canare or Mogami Quad cable, Neutrik connectors, and be done with it.

I could not possibly agree more with the above post. To me it's insane to think any other way.

That's why I said you should change how you think about cables. Don't look at the total cost of the slightly more expensive cable... look at the price difference. You aren't paying the total cost for an expensive cable... you're paying something like $10 (or less) to have one more thing in your kit that you will never have to think about again.

When we're talking about one mic over another and debating sound vs. value... and the difference is hundreds of dollars... I can understand those discussions... but in this case we're talking about something that will get more use and wear then almost anything else in your whole kit.

Believe me... I would know... good cables are a joy to have in your kit... and cheap cables are maddening at the worst possible times.

The cheapest good cables you can buy are from Markertek... and they're decent.

Markertek probably does have about the worst possible website I've ever seen though... it's so easy to search their catalog and yet the website is archaic... it's the polar opposite of B&H's website... so I did the work for you...

CANARE *click*

MOGAMI *click*

Before anyone asks... I like Mogami over Canare, because it's softer, but in your case (min price desired) the Canare is great. You can check around on these prices also, because with only one cable, the shipping from Markertek will be stupid. With 2+ cables the shipping will probably be the same... like $10 on average. I would also hit up Guy from DVestore to see what he has for cables.

I don't feel like making a thread out of another cable topic... but I built cables for a while... lots of people around here know about it and use the cables I made. I'm not doing those anymore because it wasn't worth the cost to try to compete with places like Markertek and convince people that it was worth the little extra for my custom cables. Nothing frustrated me more then going the extra mile for only one extra dollar... and constantly having people make inquiries that never turned into orders. People asked for specific colors, lengths, and connectors and then after I quoted them a competitive price I never heard from them again... I wanted to send out "thanks for wasting my time" PM's :). Meanwhile that company was constantly sending me boxes of cable with broken spools... so it was annoying to deal with that... and finally one day I talked to the main guy at that company about something I thought was important... and his attitude really turned me off in a big way. I was trying to be cool and honest with the guy about certain limitations... and instead of listening to me on the facts the guy was offended. All I could think is "hey man, you guys aren't paying me to represent your product... the least you could do is hear me out without the attitude." That company was sending people to me to buy short, raw stock as well, and I was selling it at the same cost as the website was... only these people didn't have to buy 500'... they could buy 50' or 20'... and all this time the company never did anything to encourage my support of their product... other then "thanks for bragging us up"... so when I had something to talk about and the guy didn't want to hear it... I had to say F* this.

Between the broken spools (which meant I had to take the cable out, and off the spool to use it)... the cheap shoppers that constantly wasted my time with custom cable quotes that they never even responded to (not so much as "hey I gotta' hold off on this for now" or whatever... no, nothing, no reply)... and the company rep... it just wasn't worth it. When you do something out of passion and the passion dies you stop doing it. How's that for an off-topic thread-jack?

*Please no replies of how much you like my cables or any of that... it only causes more PM's of people asking for them. I still use and like my own cables... but I use them along with dozens of other XLR cables... and I rarely think about which cable I grab when I'm running it. So no worries on the cables guys... I still love them too... but the company (the actual raw cable inventor) is the opposite of Paul from Sound-Room... or Guy from DVestore... I just had to let it go.
