hey i just got my first XLR mic today (ive always been using mini plugs) and when i turn it to the xlr input 1, i get audio from one channel. this is normal right? im just making sure so when i go on my shoot today, the audio is in one speaker and not the other.

Re: xlr audio

michael, you are right, just make sure that you have switched ch1 select to "Input 1".
What you can do is to plug the mic into Input 2 and switch the ch1 select and ch2 select switches to Input 2, then you have the mic on both channels.
If you chose a conservative level setting on CH1 (max 1 red indicator) and a somewhat hotter setting on CH2 (2-3 red indicators you should have an additional safety net against audio peaks.

Re: xlr audio

Is it me, or am I only getting one channel when I plug an external microphone into the INPUT 1 XLR connector? Do I have something screwed up, or did Panasonic intend on only getting a mono track if you plug in an external mic into the INPUT 1 XLR connection. I have to admit, I am very surprised. Not sure why, but I am.

I mean it looks like if you want 2 channels (Stereo) then you should be using the INPUT 2 XLR connection and turning those channels on under the LCD screen.

Is there some sort of setting I am not getting?

This is what I am having to do at this moment (only had the cam since April):
1). Plug in my external microphone into INPUT 2
2). In the front of the Cam, select "MIC" for INPUT 2 (I generally select MIC for Input 1 as well)
3). Under the LCD screen (inside) select INPUT 2 under the CH1 SELECT and INPUT 2 under the CH2 SELECT

Is this correct? I mean, it's the only way to get rid of the front internal microphone from working.

The first time I was testing the camera with my new AudioTechnica microphone, I - for some reason - used the INPUT 1 XLR connection. I read the manual - a little - and changed the front switches to "MIC" for input 1 and 2. I then started to tinker with the CH1/CH2 Selects and then noticed I was only getting one channel in my headphones. I really thought something was screwed up and I kinda still do.

Please set me straight!

Re: xlr audio

No, that is perfectly normal. You will get a mono sound on only one channel if you go for input 1. If you go for input two and record the same track on both channels you will have - tadamm!- a mono sound recorded on both channels. If you truly want to get stereo sound you must have 2 microphones. Now for production audio for video and motion picture there is nothing wrong in acquiring mono audio in only one channel since movies only get to be stereo/mono/5.1/7.1 after the mixing. So getting monophonic audio is just a clean way to get audio that you can edit/mix the way you like later on. Besides, any NLE will get automatically both tracks you recorded and throw them both mixed up on both channels, unless you specify the pan attributes. So basically, even if you only get one channel of recorded audio, after you capture it in your computer, it will automatically mix it down on both speakers. The only down of getting only one audio track is that you will have to monitor it with one ear only...
