There's a lot of wild, groundless speculation on that thread, mixed in with some rather curious clues that may lead to something. I've said before that I expect to see an XL2 HDV announced this year.
Canon is perched on the edge of being relegated to irrelevancy. It's intriguing that someone brought up the Amiga -- Canon's market path seems eerily similar to that of the Amiga.
The way I look at it, the bases are loaded, there are two outs in the bottom of the ninth, and Canon is down by 3. They will either hit it out of the park, or be relegated to irrelevance. They cannot dish out a warmed-over XL1s and expect to keep their "faithful". They had better take a serious punch at the DVX, and they had better make a seriously improved camera (meaning, HDV at the least) or they will have punted, like Sony did with the PD170.
So, let's all tune in a month from now and see where things are. Competition is good. Maybe we'll finally get some.

If indeed Canon is coming out with an XL2 (or whatever), one hopes that it is as good or better than the DVX100. I very much love our beloved Panny, but a new lean mean competitive camera would do much to lower the street price of the Panny. My crew could then afford to have more than one!
If Canon came out with a camera that had the same general capabilities of the DVX100, but had a removable lens, that would really be something worth looking at. I just suspect that they have to go with HD, progressive, and multiple framerates. Doing a standard def camera at this point simply doesn't make sense.

So lets see, after 7 years Canon is finally going to update their main DV camera. Good for them, and about freakin time.
And I do hope it somehow has an edge over the DVX100, because that'll just push Panny to release a DVX200 next year that would edge out the XL2. Unfortunately, Canon will probably rest on their laurels and wait another 7 years before coming out with a new model. Canon and Sony like to rest on their models, they are usually very solid models but they do nothing to push things forward for years, unlike Panasonic. If Canon or Sony get in the "cutting edge" market, then we could see some really great things rather quickly. I won't hold my breath on it happening, Panasonic will still probably only be competing with itself in a year or so again.

As far as I know.. July they where planning a release, although the unit wont be officially announced till September.
Then again.. every year for the last 3 years I have heard the same thing.

hey you guys think you've got it bad there? The NTSC version will be released then us poor PAL people will have to wait 6 months while they finally get out over here!
not that i can afford to buy a new camera but i do like to be able to drool on a PAL camera.
