I'm about to get violent with my computer.

A buddy of mine handed over some EX1 footage to me which he wrapped in a nice .mov package. Couldn't do squat with them in my pc universe so I used transcoding app (handbrake) to convert to AVI files. The codec I used was some xvid version. Life was peachy. I could view the clips in VLC, windows media, and even *gasp* after effects and premiere.

While working on the files, the divx dragon awoke and asked me if I wanted to update. Why of course I do, thanks for asking.

Then files I'd already put into a timeline and viewed became completely black. I can't open any of the files in either AE or PP now. Thinking this divx update was the culprit, I removed it. Same deal. No video.

I've obviously got the codec on my computer because I can view the converted AVI files in VLC and Windows media players, just not in the adobe apps where it matters.

And of course the guy who gave the files deleted the original EX1 output. And I did check for updates on any CS3 application which is what I'm using.

I will provide a gift certificate for a six pack of choice at their local soda supplier to anyone who can shed some light on this.

that was just funny how you went from ex1 footage to divx to edit. you cant see quicktime on your pc?
you don't have the ex1 mov footage that he gave you?
you still have the divx footage that you made from (handbrake)(which is originally linux)?

it seems a problem with your codecs, you could just install k-lite codec pack, to fix the problem, it it works from there gr8 if not, reinstall premiere and it will work and use the right codecs this time. after you install the codec, you go to video codec preferences and choose the codecs.

Tell me about it. It's all I could do to even view the things.

I've got current quicktime pro settings and all I could get from the .mov files was audio. Nothing visual.

I do have the ex1 .mov files. I'd rather have the original mp4s but he had another (paying) shoot to do the next day so he wiped his laptop.

Still have the .avi files I got from handbrake.

Going for the k-lite pack now......

Just in case this works, think about your nearest liquor store. I've got no more hair to pull out of my head.

Aight. I have video.

Got some weird scaling issues but that's livable.

PM me your favorite beer stop and you'll have some credit. You just saved me a few (likely more) hours of domestic violence with my PC here.

no problem man.

if you need an editor/colorist for any project pm me.

if you want to change the aspect ratio outside premiere, if there was a pixel aspect ratio or par other than 1.0, you can do that with mov file on pc with quicktime pro, window show movie properties then go to the video track then change display aspect ratio then save the file it will be par 1.0 from there, same thing can be done with mpeg streamclip by (squared5)

Pixel aspect ratio is good......1.0 across the board. I'm downsizing all this stuff in AE to match an SD project. It's the entire frame that's looking off. I usually just go down 66.67% to match the vertical resolution from 720 to 480 and just chop the sides. 100% view in AE is giving me a zoomed in image for some reason. I can work with it though.

Thanks a bunch for the k-lite tip. Offer still stands on the libations if you so desire.

Much appreciated.

Heh.

I've got some discrimination going on. SOME of the files I've transcoded are showing up.......others run through the exact same process are still giving me nothing but black screens even though they still play in various media players.

Screw this. I'm going to bed.

The original mov are Apple Prores which is why Premiere isn't reading it. I would do this: find someone with a Mac and FCP, then transcode the file out through Compressor with an avi wrapper and no compression. The file size would be huge, but it'll work in Premiere.

I did get the guy with the modified originals to do this and upload them on my FTP site.

Still can't play them. But yeah I thought I should be able to view prores files? It's a rare thing I can't play a .mov file of any kind.

I just downloaded another version of the k-lite pack. Still nothing.

I really don't understand this. Twice now I've been able to view some of the clips and work with them in AE. I start editing a few and then bam........nothing works anymore.

I think I just figured it out. I've got a bunch of 60p and 24p files. I just realized the 60p files were what's working (no audio), and the 24p files with which I was having trouble finding audio settings in handbrake anyway, aren't being read.

I just did a rip with no audio from an original .mov file and AE is recognizing it.

It's a bunch of sports footage so I can live without the audio if I absolutely have to.

Any ideas on how to properly transcode an audio file that's gone from mp4 to .mov? :D

half way there, cool.

can't you know the audio format from any program on you pc, usually you'll find something that has video/audio properties and tells you the video audio properties including the name, bitrate, resolution, bit depth, ....etc.
