XAVC-S support on CS6?

Hi guys,

I've just got the A77II and I've realized that the regular Premiere CS6 doesn't support XAVC-S right off the bat. You need Rovi Total to edit XAVC-S files. I'me testing Rovi Total though and I don't see the XAVC-S option while trying to create a new sequence. Any thoughts?

XAVC-S is simply a subset of the very broad ranging H.264 standard, like AVCHD but with slightly different specifications. I'd be surprised if CS6 couldn't edit that media on it's own.

Take note that a lack of sequence preset does NOT mean PP won't edit the media. The presets are simply a starting point for common media types, they're not at all necessary for PP to work.

Having said that, I do VERY strongly recommend upgrading to the newest version of PP. There are significant improvements, including better support for various media.

Thanks for the info. But when I need to edit AVCHD there's a specific AVCHD sequence preset. Which sequence preset do I need to choose to edit XAVC-S?

Like I said, you don't 'need' a preset for PP to work. Just create a new sequence that matches the specs of the media.

In my opinion, the sequence presets in PP are a confusing mess, and a total waste of time. I never use them. (The pre-supplied ones.. I make my own.)

The only thing a sequence preset does for you is set up a few basic parameters for the sequence -- frame size, frame rate, audio sample rate, and audio format... and that's it. (I'm assuming you're not working with non-square pixels or interlaced footage, but even if you are, that's just another couple of settings.)

So there's nothing stopping you typing those numbers in yourself. Just create a sequence, go to the "Settings" tab, set "Editing mode" to "Custom", and set up those four items. You can also configure your previews, and use the "Tracks" tab so say what tracks the new sequence will have, but both of those things can be changed after the sequence is created.

Having got a setup that works, you can then make your own preset. Just click "Save preset" and type in a good name. I don't use camera names in my presets, because the camera really has nothing to do with it; I just say "My 1080p 23.976" or whatever.

One area where PP CS6 is really really bad is in managing existing presets. To edit your preset, you need to change the settings and then save it again with EXACTLY the same name. This is true across the board for title presets, etc... it's really shameful that there's no proper way to edit these things after creating them.

I really think Adobe has created a disaster with all these presets. You spend forever searching through them, and trying to decide which of the many, many options applies... just for three settings? And what if you used more than one camera? Which preset would you use? It doesn't even make sense.
