WTF - PC Gone Amuck

What the hell is going on in Seattle? Schools are "outlawing" booing at sporting events. This sounds a little like political correctness gone amuck. We certainly don't want anyone feeling bad about themselves. Heck, why do we even keep score. If there are no winners we don't have any losers. And everyone knows that our world doesn't really care about winners and losers, does it.

Of course, along with boos, no foot stomping, no waving arms when the opponents are shooting free throws, no big #1 fingers and no negative chants. Loverly. :Drogar-Smoke(DBG):

But its not like theres nothing else to do instead of boo. Instead of a boo, you can just as easily cheer your players. Its not about stopping negativity to the kids, but rather fighting amongst the crowd which, of the booers, are less mature than the players

Oh, come on, Cynic. You know that problems don't stem from that. You're right, regarding fighting in the stands. But that really has nothing to do with booing. When I was in college in the 70s, there was plenty of booing and waving of arm when the opponents went to the foul line.

Nuts and bolts
nuts and bolts
we got screwed

was often heard. You didn't see fight breaking out in the stands. The problem today goes much further than that and I believe it is a sign of the times. We have decided to coddle today's youth into complete impotence.

Well, the thing is sometimes it starts with a boo, this then sometimes becomes a foul word, then fists are raised, then threats are made, then bottles are thrown then mob mentality ensues and it ends in physical violence.

Ok, ok not always but that could happen.

I don't think it should be banned, but it should be discouraged, and alternative methods should be sought.

The best way to stop the physical violence is to start putting people in jail for it. Hooliganism has no place in sports...perhaps if we didn't have sports we could put an end to the fighting. Think of it...no more soccer (U.S. term - football to the rest of the world) and we wouldn't have problems with all the hooligans in the stands. Sounds like a reasonable way to put and end to it.

George Carlin called it a long time ago.

He coined the phrase "The pussification of America."

It's sad to see that he was right. :(

Gratuitous lawsuits, extreme safety measures, behavior modification... what the hell is going on?

I used to play with lawns darts and firecrackers man! We never killed each other.

I agree with Blaine....no booing? Please. You can't legislate a feeling. How do you think BOOing began? I'm sure it was a human need to display some sort of verbal displeasure towards an event...political, sporting or otherwise.

If you outlaw booing, the masses will just find something else to use. Its human nature to express...whatever it is they need to express. Good or bad. no?

I thought this thread was going to be about movies like WARGAMES or ELECTRIC DREAMS or maybe SHORT CIRCUIT.

anyway, as someone with little to no interest in sports, uhh.... i lost my train of thought there. ummm.... damn. here's a pic.

Bwahahaha...dammit, Zak. Here I am on a good rant and you have to go and break the mood...

Boooo!!!!

You know, I'm sure booing originated waaaaay back when - to the first civilization. What other human behavior are they gonna ban??

sorry, don't let me interrupt. i'm off to the park where some little kids like to play soccer in the evenings. i'm looking forward to excercising my right to boo these aspiring athletes.

in all seriousness "pussification" is the word that crossed my mind as well.

hahahaha!! you should get that on tape...

Sooooo... instead of booing, try farting. You will be amazed at how quickly booing will allowed. It's getting to the point where the teams will come out, and flip a coin to see who is the number one team, and the number two team. No winners or losers. Nobody's little feelings will get hurt.

It's not "PC", it's Social Engineering.

It's SO much easier to control people when you've trained them to be docile.

Things like this are not really all that effective in the long run, but much easier and less obvious than giving everyone a lobotomy.

[No smiley here]

What would sports be without booing!? My favorite part of going to college football games is to boo the opposing team as they come onto the field. What you want 100,000 people to be quiet while the enemy walks on the field? It's harmless pride, done in good fun.

And then there's the other kind of booing that we hear at the Columbus Blue Jackets games on a nightly basis. The fans are right for booing then, too. Paying customers not getting what they want...so they let them know about it.
