WTF Microsoft

NOw I know that a whole bunch of MAC folks are going to jump all over this, but I am not switchingt to a MAC nor do I think they are better, or ever will be. SO now that I got that out of the way, time to vent on Microsoft. So I have been rendering out a version of my film AWAKE all night, so that the music comoser has the new version to work with. IT has been rendering for a good 8hrs, and suddenly at 8:15AM this morning, I hear from the other room the dreaded "do do do do daaaaa" music of the computer shutting down. I asked frantically my wife if she had restarted the computer. she said she hadn't. Still skeptical, I sat at the computer watching it restart, and crying over the 8 hr render that I had just lost. When windows pops up again a nice friendly message from microsoft comes up "your computer has been updated, this update needed your computer to be restarted"
WTF I said really loud. My computer needed to be restarted, so microsoft now does it for me?
That is a bunch of Bull.
Anybody else had this problem?

Again, no MAC propaganda please. I don't want to start a disscussion, or war. I have the right to be pissed at Microsoft without being bombarded by missionaries from the MAC realm.

never... I just cancel automatic updater (or whatever it's name is) and live happily...

btw. I have to because every update will couse 1000 errors from my matrox editing card...

On my editing machine, I have EVERYTHING like that turned off. I have removed all anti-virus programs with auto updates, I don't even have it hooked up to the net or the network. I (well my friend) took off all the accessories like games and such, and basically just stripped it down to the programs I absolutely need. Too bad they don't make premiere 1.5 for Linux, I hear that it's a WAY more stable OS.

I would do the same, except being a poor college student I can only afford one computer, and that has to be for everything. I am definatly turning off automatic updates, but I just have to remind myself in the future to update. NEver had a problem with anything not working after an update, but this really pissed me off.

Nice. I just turned them off, and I get a little window that pops up and says "there is a problem, your computer might be at risk, Automatic updates has been turned off, click here to fix the problem".
My goodness Microsoft, are we afraid of something?

Now I keep getting this stupid message that says my lite on DVD burner isn't "Microsoft certified" or something. It never ends.....

Well Scharky if you had a MAC you would ... Just kidding, I'm not going there. Anyway, as a MAC user I just wanted to let you know that your not alone. On the mac platform they are doing the same kind of thing. The computer automaticly checks for updates and will download them for you. All of which is great if you are general Joe and you use your computer as a word processor. I had an awful experience when I automaticly updated my OS to 10.3.5 My NLE (FCP) no longer worked, so I had to wipe & reinstall EVERYTHING! What a pain in the ASS! So I just wanted to let you know that your friends on the other side expierence the same thing. I think that it is an industry trend. I guess they figure that people are too stupid to know to check for updates, and then update when appropriate.

Moral of the story: Auto anything SUCKS! Keep it manual.

scharky you can either create two users: one with no network/internet and everything turned off and another one normal. or you get a second system drive and make a totally new XP. that is the cleaner version.
once a week i manúally check for updates on virus software and XP etc. at the same time i defrag etc. usually it is thursday morning when the last weekend´s projects get thrown out and the new weekend starts (doing many events).

Or at the very least you could set them to be user controlled, so it ASKS you before doing anything...

since we're on the topic of windows... i've been having a problem with links. I cant click on any kind of link. Itll just go to one of those phony search pages. Windows IE doesnt even work, it shuts itself down as soon as i go to a website. I have to use the Ares as a browser. Anyone know what can be wrong?

Ive already tried ADAWARE and SPYWARE DOCTOR

souinds like adware has taken control of your pc...

is you are not using it, please download firefox and use it. its very good and its ben recently updated to .03.

try spybot search and destory as well... its a free app and it may pick up some things adaware doesnt..

NO CA$H, it sounds like your browser has been hijacked. There's a lot on the web on how to fix it but it's pretty involved. Google "browser hijacked" and good luck to ye.

I guess you gotta be offline when rendering, plus you won't have all this spammers trying to ping your IP address, and monitor your internet activities
maybe it was a hacker that saw what the pc was doing and restarted it remotely

firewalls
IP blockers
and most importantly disconect the ethernet cable when not needed (or wireless adapter)

I doubt it was a hacker becasue the microsoft message told me that it restarted my computer, and just yesterday, my laptop gave me a message that new updates had been installed and that my computer would restart in 5 min, or I could restart right now. Still, it pisses me off that microsoft has control over restarting my computer without my permission.

yes they do.. and if you dont have sp2 installed (win xp users), micro will manually install this update for you... april 12th was the cut off date for folks to comply with instaling sp2...

did i hear someone say Big Brother..?

Huh? I still have sp1, no attempts by ms to install sp2. You have to disable automatic updates, that's all there is to it. cause I haven't had any issues at all. i'm so glad i didn't install sp2, all i hear is that it's a pain in the ass.

Ah but you have given permission, if you have told windows to download and install updates automatically. You should read the user agreement.
