Anyone else having issues with FCP 4.5? It's crashing on me everytime I try to capture...... My scratch disk has 250gigs ready to be used so why is this happening?

GRRRRRRRRR

you triyng to capture this footage? u better send me some raw files , and i've had problems w. FCP crashing a lot but not everytime i capture.....

Joe, I'll send you a link whenever I can get this god damn thing running........

Luis, I'm running version 10.4.4..... The only thing different now is that I'm capturing on to a new external hard drive. Also, this was happening in the past out of the blue and I just did a software update and everything was all good but it didn't fix the problem this time.

Not sure.
I'm running FCP 5 on 10.4.2

Have you always been running 4.5 on Tiger?
I thought I had heard it was a bit buggy... but that could have been on the initial release of Tiger.

Not buggy enough to be causing that.

Ok --

1) make sure the drive has been formatted as MacOSExtended journal off
2) repair all your permissions using DiskUtility
3) Do you know how to trash your preferences?

-- How do you have the Drive set up FW 800 in? DVX FW 400 in? Shouldn't be an issue but if you've got it going into the same bus it causes some issues sometimes. RARE!!

You don't have the camera daisy chained.... right?

Coffee,
sounds like you know your stuff. CaptM's advise is legit.
For what it's worth...
I'm using FCP5. Everytime things get buggy on me I just trash my preferences. Works everytime for me.... so far anyway.

Good luck,

P.S. a friend of mine ordered a hard drive... (different than he'd been using) and had the same kind of trouble. It ended up being the hard drive. He ended up calling the company. They bailed him out with the proper way to format it to get him up and running. He runs FCP4. I'm sure you tried... capturing on your old drive? Just to check.:undecided

Luis, every now and then things just crash on me so trust me when I say that I know this OS version has its bugs.

Captain, if I remember correctly that's how I formatted it but I'll do it again to be sure.

I'm so new to macs that I don't know how to repair all permissions using DiskUtility
or how to trash the preferences.

Anybody care to walk me through that?

REPAIRING DISK PERMISSIONS:

1) Open your system drive

2) Open the folder 'Applications'

3) Open the folder 'Utilities'

4) Open the program 'Disk Utility'

5) On the left hand side you will see a list of your hard drives.
Choose your system drive and hit "Repair Disk Permissions"

I found this information HERE

Trashing Preferences - FCP 3 and FCP 4

1)Quit FCP.

2)Open your Hard Drive.

3)Set to Column View.

4)Follow the path: Users > Name > Library > Preferences.

5)In the Preferences Pane look for "com.apple.FinalCutPro.plist"
Drag the FCP plist to the Trash.

6)In the same Preference Pane, look for the Final cut Pro User Data Folder.
For FCP 4, drag both "Final Cut Pro 4 Preferences" and "Final Cut Pro POA Cache" to the Trash.

Do NOT empty the Trash.

Launch FCP and check all your settings. All FCP setting will have reverted to default. Don't forget to reset your Scratch Disk settings.
Once FCP is up and running, empty the Trash.

this is a problem and known issue / complaint with FCP like no native 16X9 in DVX.

You just can't capture to an EXTERNAL hardrive.

Sooooooo

What you gotta do is ....

Capture to your local hardrive then move to an EXT.

I capture, work until my local says no more room to render or capture, then
1)shut down FCP
2)copy everything in the Capture Scratch folder to a folder on the external that I call "Capture Scratch Copy"
3)make sure the number of files transferred matches
4) drag the files from the local to the trash and (gasp) empty the trash - you have to delete - because if you leave them in the trash FCP will find them somehow(seems like it shouldn't, but ...) and you wont be able to remap your files
5) open your project --it will say WTF? 100 media files offline! You wanna reconnect? You say yes.
6) in the next screen you can hit search and it will look over all your harddrives or you can use the "search a sinle location" and choose Coffee's Ext. Drive/Capture Scratch Copy and it will be faster. Once it finds one of those files, it will batch import the rest automatically.
7) Occasionally I've had to re-render a few things, but not always - not sure why

so this will work for you

I've been capturing to a LaCie drive for years... allbeit three different ones as 2 have crashed on me... but I've never had a problem capturing to an external drive.

Make sure you are actually capturing at DV or at highest DV50 and not trying to do uncompressed onto an unRaided drive. But other than that it should be fine.

I'm hoping it's just a permissions issue.

What version FCP are you using?
I just could never get that to work - always had same problen as coffee.
And then I heard that it didn't work.
I have a 6 month old lacie with firewire 2, firewire, and USB 2.0
running FCP 5.0

I capture to an external drive all the time. I edit on a powerbook, so i have to. I use a firewire 800 to 400 cable to the drive array (non raid)

then plug the camera into the 400 port and capture away. I captured yesterday without a problem.

Obvioulsy, you need to trash the prefs. first do a software update, then trash the prefs, then repair permissions, then run the program.

I'm using 4.5 on 10.4 without problems.

Well it works now thanks to you guys!

I trashed the prefs and fixed the permissions by following Luis's steps...... Thank you everyone.

Strange that I read this the other day. I popped an old drive in my enclosure and deleted all the content and went to capture only to have it really buggy. I followed my own advice (and luis') and additionally re-partitioned the drive and now it works great.
