I have an audio fuzz even when I am sitting on the blue screen in playback mode. I am not using a great set of headphones, I have a pair of 7506's coming next week. the onboard mic is very nasty sounding after reviewing my months of footage, I have a new mic package arriving shortly but i don't know why there should be any audio coming out of my headphones when there is nothing on the screen? HELP.

Headphones will make all the difference for sure.
And yeah 'bout only use for onboard 100a mic is ambient sound.
Guess 100b is better.
But your right to get another mic(s)

The DVX headphone amp is notoriously noisy. Record some tape, and listen to the audio in your NLE. You will see (hear) that the headphone circuit has noise that never gets to the tape. However, if you are using the built-in mic, then the headphone amp is the least of your problems.

I have a horrible static sound through my headphones even when nothing is playing, just a blue screen, and also during filming and playback. but put the tape in another machine and the footage does not have the hiss. It is only on the headphone out jack and the built in speaker, and it is is loud, and it gets louder as I turn up the speaker/headphone volume. It is incredibly distracting and I am thinking that something is seriously wrong with it.

"notoriously noisy"...if this is what everyone puts up with I am floored. how can something make it to the market with a static hum like that. I cannot focus in on how my sound is. is there a portable sound recording device that people use? what a pain in the ass, I just recieved my new microphone and plugged it in and was hoping to really listen and hear the difference between it and the onboard, which I can tell is substantial, but I cannot help but focus on the irritating hiss. I would not have bought the camera if I new the audio was that bad. It is the visuals then that attract people to this camera, AND THAT IS WHY THE MIC DEBATE AND HELPLINE IS FOREVER GOING ON. how do people monitor their sound during journalistic filming with only one person?
thanks for the replys as I can't sleep.

Well, I can hear the hiss with my Etymotic headphones, but it certainly does not drive me crazy. Since you are using on-board mic, trying switching it OFF since mic is still probably active even when not rolling tape.

Maybe your camera is defective. Send it to me for a six month evaluatiion... :engel017:

Oops. just read you have new mic plugged in. DOn't know what else to tell you. Maybe someone else can help in the morning.

check the output from your rcas to amplifier system , might be you have serious problem with grounding in headphone amp
the dvx is one of the worst design headphone amp circuit , the 100 was bad and quiet , the a, is bad and loud ( they just amplified bad signal more without actually improve the amp) , dont know how good is b now .
i never use it and drive back only from rca s to get some dissent audio spot check , since you must be crazy to listen to delayed audio( was improved in dvx 100b)

It has to be the headphone amplifier, I hooked up my new microphone set a few times and that makes no difference. I wish I had someone near me with the 100A to hear theirs. (north of ottawa) I just can't believe panasonic would be happy with this. I was expecting nothing to come from the headphones when there was nothing on the screen. I only have 10 hours on the camera and have treated it so kind, but this was the first time I plugged in headphones. I would like to know of a good recorder with xlr inputs and a headphone jack for audio.

about external recorder , it depends on your budget , the good ones cost more then the camera

Try doinga search here. There have been several threads discussing other options (MD recorders, other options, MAudio has a new flash memory recorder 16/48 I think...)

the fr-2 2 tracks with tc + 3 4 gb cards is around 2500+ external powe and you are around 3 ( charger +batteries)
it would be stupid to buy one without tc for 600 less

I purchased a portable headphone amplifier from headroom, and I ran rca cables out of the DVX and into the headphone amp via a line in jack. then hooked up my headphones to the amp, turned it on, and crystal clear audio while filming! I am so glad it worked as I could not stand the noise from the onboard amp, even though i knew it was not getting onto the tape, it felt like it was when I was filming.
