Wow...I am screwed! 24pa!

I have tried what seems like everything. I can not get my 24pa footage to capture in 23.98! I have tried capturing the following ways:

DV NTSC 48khz
DV NTSC NDF
and then remove the pull down afterward and it gives me an error that it was unable to find clips with Advanced Pull down.

I tried NTSC NDF and NTSC 48khz with advanced pull down and that won't work!

Anyone have any ideas??? IS it because my tape is so long? It is literally an hour with maybe 4 or 5 "pauses".

Re: Wow...I am screwed! 24pa!

Double check that the footage was in fact shot at 24pa (F6 default)

Try setting a timecode in and out number of a short scene. Use the Advanced Pulldown removal and do a batch capture. I assume you're using the DVX for the capture and not another deck or camera? (Should work either way but jus want to check)

Re: Wow...I am screwed! 24pa!

If I capture like 5 minutes it will capture with pull down removal and be 23.98. I am using the DVX to capture...What gives?

Re: Wow...I am screwed! 24pa!

When I try to capture the entire tape it doesn't work. Should I go in and set ins and outs on the whole tape and then batch capture?

Re: Wow...I am screwed! 24pa!

It should work with longer lengths but it starts pushing things to move a huge amount of data in one go. Check your disk space and your memory if you're going to be download that much. If you have a time code break(s) in the middle tape that could also be causing a problem since you're treating it as one long take.

I'd suggest breaking up the captures if possible anyway.
Log the time code in/out points of each take or setup. Then use the batch capture. That way things are more organized and you have a more reliable capture.

Re: Wow...I am screwed! 24pa!

How do I go in and set those in/out codes after the fact? Is an in out just simply a "pause" in the recording? Can I just stop and restart capture manually without trouble?

Re: Wow...I am screwed! 24pa!

Professional editors usually log their clips. Open the Log and Capture window. They enter in the in and out timecodes in the bottom and write in the scene info. The take number is incremented automatically and then the next tiem codes are entered. When you do a batch capture it can capture what you already logged based on selected clips or other criteria.

Unfortunately you can't change the logging timecode after you've captured it once. You can select the clip and Edit > Item Properties to see the setup. Since you have a large batch you could see about breaking down what you have and reload them as those broken down clips. (I've never done it that way)
One of the issues is if you start partway through a sequence. If FCP doesn't see a full cycle of frames then it will assume it's not advanced pulldown. If you pause in the middle you may be stopping mid-cycle.

Re: Wow...I am screwed! 24pa!

Thanks foor the advice. Here is what I figured out. If I capture to then end of the tape then it ends up being 29.97. When i let it run to the end it says "locating timecode break" and searching for media...I assume this is the problem. It is dropping the cadence at some point. What can i do to avoid this next time? If I stop it right before the end of the tape it captures 23.98.

Where can i read more about logging clips/in and out time codes. I want to make the process as streamlined and as organized as possible...Thanks again for the help.

Re: Wow...I am screwed! 24pa!

Always check your timecode before shootiong a scene. (Set you DVX to display everything). If it's 0 for other than your first scene then it will be seen as a break.

If you've changed setups or have turned off the camera (or 0 timecode as above) hit the Rec Check button on top right of camera and it will rewind and regain the timecode.

Read the FCP manual regarding time codes and 24p/24pa to get a better handle on all of this. When I shoot I write down the start timecode before shooting and write down the end timecode after the shot. You can enter these in FCP and use just teh takes you like.
