WoW addict

Nop, that's the way it is. I've colleague at work who play WoW 4 hours a day, they eat with one hand and play with other. It is an addiction. Worsrt part? They are over the age of 30. Pathetic.

My best friend is a WoW addict. Just last night we were playing Wii when he got a phone call from his guild leader who instructed him to get on his computer immediately to raid with "the party."

I don't want to speak negatively of my friend, but he is very tied to the World or Crafts. Whenever we sit down to brainstorm ideas it is difficult for him to branch away from ideas involving WoW. And he doesn't get why I'm not super supportive of WoW movies.

But he shows promise. We bought all this film gear in order to fight his addiction.

I know a guy that is on there ALL the time, but his rationalization is that if he wasn't on wow, he would be out at the bar drinking all his money away. Personally, I can't get that into that stuff.

I used to play EQ 10 hours a day. It was awesome. I have well over a year of realtime logged in that game. Ah those were the days. It's a lifestyle for sure. Is it maladaptive? Hey.. if you can get away with it and you enjoy it, more power to you. I feel for those who put it before real world obligations though. When I said get away with it I meant are able to support the lifestyle without sacrificing anything critical. I was graduated from college back then and had a lot of good paying contract jobs with weeks in between. Now I've got a regular 40 hour salaried job and my video business on the side and wife and 2 kids. I'm lucky to play WoW for an hour or so every couple of weeks. It was kinda rough at first transitioning from gamer to responsible husband and father and now business owner, but I look back without regrets at either lifestyle. Its all about place and time.

So that kid.. he was over the top. I was never like that, nor would I say he typifies even the more hardcore gamers. If it was scripted they did a great job making it believable. He seemed genuinely oblivious. WoW isn't that great of a game really. It's a timesucker because it's easy and amusing and quite pretty graphically, but its nowhere near as enchanting as EQ which although dated in terms of the game engine now, came at the right time and place and with the right stuff to be really potent. I gave up a couple of girlfriends for that game so to say it had no affect on my life would be a lie.

Sorry to write a book, but I find it interesting to talk about. Online games are just another form of social interaction. To outsiders it seems ironic and pathetic and there's the stereotype that they have no real world social skills.. like the dude in the video, but it's more interaction than most people see in their "normal" lives, plus you're constantly problem solving and engaged in goal oriented thinking. There's glory in one's successes even if they amount to a hill of **** in reality. There are far worse addictions, but yeh there's people who are messed up to begin with that get sucked in to the point of complete abandonment of real world interests/obligations.
