Wow.  So Glad No Politics Allowed Here

Re: Wow.  So Glad No Politics Allowed Here

Re: Wow.  So Glad No Politics Allowed Here

Muir,
I'm the same way. Liberals think I'm Conservative because I support responsible spending; Conservatives think I'm liberal because I can't see why the law should prevent two guys from getting married. I just like to think that I make my mind up on the issue instead of following a party line. Thinking for myself gets me in a lot of trouble.

Re: Wow.  So Glad No Politics Allowed Here

Jim, once again, you are speaking my mind (well, maybe there are reasons for two guys not getting married, but that's another issue - and not political at all, IMO).

I just want to comment on the fact that most intelligent people I know tend to fall into the same category you describe (to left for righties, too right for lefties). I think it reflects how out of touch with reality politicians are. Like in marketing, they go for the biggest slice of the pie, ignoring the fact that it's actually a very small minority.

But maybe it's the way the universe is supposed to be. The extremes highlight the sanity of the normal. (Normal... normal... what is it normal? Am I normal? Are YOU normal? - Vera Chytilova, "Jester and the Queen")

More politicians need to think that way. Unfortunately, it'll never happen.

On the whole gay marriage issue... my opinion has always been that gay people should have the same right as straight people to lose half their **** in a messy divorce. :P

Re: Wow.  So Glad No Politics Allowed Here

The whole institution of marriage has been so devaluated by the ease with which people decide to solve their problems by divroce. Why not go a step further?

Why do I need a paper to live with a woman I love? What is the purpose of marriage - is it mainly a cultural thing, or a legal thing?

I think historically (I am not a historian, anthropologist, or any of 'soft scientist' category, so the interpretation is entirely my own, layman's thinking on the subject), marriage developed as a way to protect the 'weaker gender' (feminists need no comment). The fact that it takes nine months of gestation and many years of raising a child commanded a mechanism by which the male committed to have a lasting relationship with the female, including providing material support during times she had limited opportunity to take care of herself. Enter marriage.

The problem is - individually, I don't need the institution if I am committed enough (common-law spouse). It's the society that need a 'proof of commitment' - that's where it becomes legal, and ultimately political, issue. But what's the purpose of that commitment? It may be entirely different today (pension benefits) than in the past (ensuring continuity of procreation - is that the right word?).

WOW - this is long. Anyway - some of my friends are gays and wonderful people, but I don't understand the marriage issue, to be frank. Maybe because it's about something else for me than for them...

NAH, I was just pulling your leg. It's execution. ;D

Edit:
No wonder people think I am a dweeb. I meant:

[glow=red,2,300]NAH, I was just pulling your leg. It's crucifixion.[/glow]

It's from "Life of Brian" - trying to put some comedy into the tragic.

I have been accused of being all four, I am like a duck, it just rolls off back.  I think what happens is people tend to type the first thing on their mind.  I do my best to let three or thoughts to process so that i can clearly express myself.  Which sometimes the tide turns in the thread and TC has post 10 responses ;) by the time I figure out what i want to say and the thread gets hijacked by John Hudson and we are talking about how fast water really moves over Niagra Falls?  This is why I try think about what I post.....because I have no idea what I just wrote.  That's why it is in the cafe.[/quote]

LOL :D

Left wingers are known as Left Wing because the Democrats sit on the left side.  Right wingers are known as Right Wing because the Republicans sit on the right side.  But I think we should add BROKEN WING, which is what should happen to most of the left wing and right wing - especially the ones who don't agree with ME!  ;D

I guess it depends which way you are turned in the chamber ???

John Ashcroft (our "Beloved Attorney General") said his opinion of moderates was that anything in the middle of the road got run over, now I am worried :-/

Anyway, Hudson what is your favorite chic flick, or favorite show on Lifetime?

I can't believe your US-centric ignorance! ;D

Actually, it's like this:

You take a map of the world (and I mean a REAL map, with Greenwich meridian in the middle, not one of those where Washington DC. is smack in the centre).

You turn it upside down.

Look who is on the left, and who is on the right. Depending on which side you root for, you are a left winger or a right winger. ;)

Yeah, we had some snow here the other day, but it was not enough to make a snowball.

Re: Wow.  So Glad No Politics Allowed Here

Re: Wow.  So Glad No Politics Allowed Here

...and I thought it was funny ???

Actually, it comes from my childhood, when I just couldn't understand the media talk about right and left.

Then one day, being somwhat of a geography buff, I accidently looked into my world atlas upside down, and there it was! I finally understood it!

In a world upside down, the difference between right and left is crystal clear! :P

Re: Wow.  So Glad No Politics Allowed Here
