four years ago nobody would have thought twice about this. but now with all this HD stuff going on. i'm no so sure.

i know what some of you are thinking.... it all depends on your output medium. if it's dvd the dvx will be fine...

but lets say you have delusions of grander and the output medium will probably be hdcam-sr and be shipped off to every film festival known to man kind. then when you sell it for a cool mill, it'll be printed to 35 :D

is SD enough any more?

Story. Keep your eye focused on that. Write an incredible script and the recording medium will become incidental and likely come up to match caliber of the story you're telling.

Putting recording format questions in front of flawless casting, thoughtfully dispatched production design and finding the best craftspeople you can collaborate with betrays your project.

For a moment, say you're the producer. If you've done your pre-production work - and there should be incredible amounts of that - then you will likely find that recording medium will simply become another line item in the larger telling of the story.

There is a great thread following a sizable feature somewhere on the board right now - ask Adam C. (Taormina) what fraction of his Corrado pre-production time has been given over to format questions. I'll bet he'll tell you that it is one of the lesser aspects of what he is focused on. That thread should be required reading for everyone who wants to "make a feature".

The simple answer is that the DVX will be fine - certainly enough for a filmout and digital HD projection. Look at Iraq in Fragments as an example. All DVX with a well-conceived post-production workflow. Nominated last year for an Academy Award.

Your story is the limiting factor. The real question should be this, "is my story good enough for every festival known to mankind?"

completely agree with everything you said.

iraq in fragments is not a very good example though... it's a documentary so people forgive certain aspects of the "quality".

will a narrative film like "the horse whisperer" or "50 first dates" shot in 2.39 on the dvx really hold up when projected in HD or printed to 35?

would the audience be able to tell?

are there any tests on the net? i've been searching but everything is talk and no pics.

There have been many, many threads recently about this very question. They're scattered throughout the DVX and HVX subforums but a search would probably pull them up. I'll try to find them...

Going back to what Erik said, I'll have to agree that the story comes before the recording medium. I'd make a feature with a PXL-2000 if I was given the opportunity!

David Lynch's latest Inland Empire was shot with a PD-150 and transferred to 35.And yes he planned it that way :) So if you get lucky and your film gets picked up I think you will be fine. But like everyone else says concentrate on a good story first.
