Would you like to apply?

I go to Target alot.

Great prices on E V E R Y T H I N G ; DVD's, my son's clothes, cat food, whatever...

One thing that is starting to piss me off however is every single time I go through the check out I get asked by some hapless employee making $7.00 an hour:

"Would you like to apply for our Target Visa?"

I politely say "No thank you."

Then it dawned on me. Why is Target promoting debt? Most people that go to Target (Generally speaking as always) are of the middle class variety (Yeah; like there is such a thing as that anymore). I go to Target cause I ain't rich. That's why and my local Wall Mart has a bunch of maniacs shopping over there.

Why would they want to PIMP me a CREDIT CARD thus promoting DEBT? So I called my local Target as I am in crusader mode.

I asked the Manager this question: (I pre-empted the dilaogue with letting him know I was aware he was a pawn in the corporate game and that the store level has to do what corporate says.....)

"Why do I have to get Pimped for a Credit Card EVERY SINGLE TIME I check out?"

He goes on and on spouting; well, we give 1% to the school of your choice locally.... the employee's have to do this..... it promotes customer loyaty....and then this one

Well I have one of them and I think it's a more convenient way to pay at the check out.

I said "Well why not just use your banks check cashing card?" of course he went 'Duh blah dun ..." stuttering the whole time (I mean let's face it this guy is probally making mid 40,000 K)

So what the hell; what do you guys say? I think its bullshit. I'm tired of being pimped for a credit card. I get enough of these offers in the mail and through telemarketers. I say it shows Target Brands GREED more than anything. I can't go through the check out without being pimped for a credit card?!

Debt is bad. I don't know about you fellas/gals... I have 2 car payments and our companies make the payments via car allowance. That is the only debt in MY NAME and my personal finances arent even paying for it.

DEBT IS CRIPPLING and I cant believe Targte is promoting it

Rant over.

Hudson, I feel ya-

It has to do with the fact that there is no more middle class, let's face it, we're lower class and that means we can't afford what retailers are selling. They know this, we're poor and they are not just selling the essentials like toilet paper, they are selling things like DVDs and cat food (I know people love their pets but they are a luxury item.) How can these stores turn a profit if their target (no pun intended) customer is dirt poor?

You answered the question already with the title of your post.

It sucks, but that's the nature of commerce. We hear about J-Lo buying $300,000 cars but it's us po' folks that are driving this economy.

The best way to not be a "chump" to this ploy is to keep saying "no" at the checkout. Be patient, save for what you want, and pay cash. You are doing well in your crusade John, I support you.

(Of course I did use several thousand in student loans to finance my film business, but hey, that's an investment right? Who am I kidding, I'm screwed.)

AMEN! Rant on! I wish I could tell every pimply faced kid who offers me a credit card to shove it up his ass. Debt Bad. Shoving card up ass, good.

Constantine,

Isn't your signature a little ironic when compared to your post? I'm just foolin' with ya laddie!
