i have a athlon x2 3800+, 2.5gb of ddr3 ram, ide hard drives, sound card, fast vid card. If i upgrade to a Intel Core 2 Duo E6850, 4gb of DDR2 800 RAM, Serial hard drives,

will i see a huge diff? also going from my 19inch wide lcd to a 22inch wide lcd.

If your camera is HD, yes, I would say go for it. But if you are still editing in SD, don't bother upgrade. Your computer is plenty fast for SD (even for HDV, if you have the patience).

I would say that a quad is the upgrade you should do.

And I never experienced that I had to much computer power, when it comes to editing.

I disagree. Yes, you can never have too much CPU and RAM, but there is always that that's called "good enough". And for SD footage, what he's got is ok. A cheaper modern PC will be just fine. No need for thousands of dollars on quad CPUs.

I am still using a 3.06 Ghz P4 DELL PC with HDV footage. I get full speed on Vegas in preview quality (no plugins), and that's acceptable.

For your processor it is all about the speed they are rated at, simple enough. (or you could overclock the E6850 a ton then it would be a no-brainer). The Quads are not that much faster because they are not Native... they are still just Duos and the 3rd and 4th processors don't get used a whole lot. But the Q6600 is a bargain now and it can hit 3.4Ghz STABLE.

For your RAM it depends on their speeds, again you didn't list them... also you can get FAST! DDR2 for DIRT cheap... I am talking about DDR2 1100Mhz for $80 a pair of 1GB...

Where you are sure to see a difference is in your Hard drives... you can get a Seagate 500GB 7200.10 or 7200.11 for like $90 now... and those in a RAID-0 will give you double the speed you'll need for 1080p so it is always nice to have them set up like that.

either way, they are tough and have the fastest on-board RAIDWhat I would do is pick up an Overclocking motherboard for like $150 which come with the fastest RAID south bridges.... it is worth it just for that. Then you can get the Q6600 up to 3.3GHz blindfolded... and possibly your RAM too...s, so just for that I'd get one of those....

so i upgraded the pc, and so far in vegas ive seen much better performance, high quality previews without lag, quicker rendering. However it seems that outside of vegas windows xp 64-bit overall is a bit laggier/slower than my old system on win xp.

Also, remember, with the quad, you'll see better performance if you do color and film effects in Vegas. All that runs off the processor and the film effects are especially rough on the processor. I definitely think the quad was a good upgrade. I'm about to do it myself, actually.

But yes, you'll see better playback performance with your quad if you are using effects.

The benefits with quad for me is when I have a very long project and wants to output it to DVD, the encoding times goes quicker, and when you have a deadline. You do like when the final render goes fast.
