Worst movie marketing ever...

First it was this:

Then they claimed it was fake, they didn't know where it came from, but then this:

And now:

What's going on!?! And you'd think they'd have learned their mistake after the first... and second time!? Not only is it bad photoshoping, it's bad... everything...

Hope that's not the real posters but that said, I did fall asleep in the trailer.

I actually thought that the first trailer was fake at first, mixing clips from the X-Men with movies with clips from other movies. Unfortunately about halfway through the trailer, I realized that it wasn't fake. It was just bad.

Hmm...

See the first one, IMO, is okay because Emma's costume, if "darkened" would leave her looking like she's nekkid.

Personally I think this is going to be the best X-men film to date. Aranofsky's The Wolverine probably would have crushed them all, but he ended up dropping out because of the long term travel requirements.

worst marketing? so i guess no one has seen the teaser for Conan the Barbarian?

I have to say that the Conan teaser works much better in a darkened theater than on TV or on a computer screen. I am not saying it is a great teaser by any means, but it is certainly better than the horrible X-Men posters.

As for teasers and provocative movie posters, this is how it is done folks.

In fact, this was such a brilliant teaser trailer they did practically the same thing for the sequel.

You really think that was the real reason?

I dunno. That's what he said -- he also said he loved the script and really wanted to work with Jackman. I guess he could just be blowing smoke but that doesn't seem his style. I just think he really didn't want to live in Japan for a year.

I worked for the guy who made those two trailers, Tony Silver. He also directed Style Wars, which was one of the first documentaries on hip hop and grafitti. He died a few years ago.

^ Holy crap, that's pretty amazing. When I was in high school my friends and I would watch a 3rd generation VHS of Style Wars that must have been taped off Channel 13. A few years ago I got it on DVD and it has some nice supplementals.

Did you work on anything as cool as Alien or Style Wars with Tony Silver?

No, I was an assistant editor in the last few years of his business. He did some stuff for The Truman Show when I was there and a bunch of independent trailers. I got there right when his partner left to start another trailer company, the infamous Ant Farm. Too bad I missed that boat.

Awesome to hear about your adventures in the movie world Batutta.

The Alien and Aliens teasers are pretty much my favorite teaser trailers. In both cases I think that they could have just used the teasers and not even need to release a regular old theatrical trailer. Those teasers are that good.

Wow, how infinitely better are these fan made posters for the film? Amazing.

I agree they are much better, but I would wager the studio would say they are too arty, and the second two are maybe a bit too passive. They almost look like they could be Criterion edition cover art. The second two especially.

Still though, from a design perspective they are leagues above the official ones that the studio has released so far.

I don't know. The first place I saw it was in a dark theater. I thought that actually made it look even worse, being juxtaposed with real movie trailers with some sense of budget. It just looks like bad keying and an After Effects smoke generator.

JJ Abrams sure knows how to make a teaser. Star Trek had a great one. Cloverfield's was pretty awesome too.

Alien and Aliens still give me chills.

You know... sometimes I wonder... is it really a bad thing that Hollywood's pumping out so much CGI and techni-candy-colored fluff? Or... is all that sugary "perfection" just making it that much easier for truly good films to rise above the rest?

Can you imagine if a really gripping film experience like the original Alien came out this year? (with modest and appropriate updates)... When I first saw Alien I was freaked out by how effective it was.

What I worry about is whether the younger generations have gotten so accustomed to CGI that they think it looks more real than reality. I was watching an old Harryhausen monster movie and my 7 year old caught a glimpse and said, "It doesn't even look real!"
