World's Smallest Softbox?

Well, probably not the smallest, but I have never seen a softbox this small. Are they common (for weddings, etc.)? Are the effective? The conventional wisdom as delivered to me is that soft light sources need to be as big as possible and as close to the subject as possible.

Re: World's Smallest Softbox?

chimera makes them that small, sure. they come with/for frezzi mini-fills and other on-camera lights of that size.

i have a few of the XXS chimeras for my mini-pros and use them for back-lights and fills.

yes...your bigger/closer theory is generally correct, but even on the smaller fixtures they smooth the light out a bit and help it wrap around the subject a little more.

Re: World's Smallest Softbox?

I use one on my ENG camera at work. I should say that I USED one. When I first starting using the softbox it seemed to be really good and really cut down the beam of hard light hitting the talent in the face. But it was TOO soft. I found myself opening the iris all the way up and in some instances even gaining up! So I switched to higher wattage bulb which seemed to work a whole lot better until I started having problems with the light! I guess I shouldn't have been running a high wattage bulb in that Anton Bauer light. By the way, I believe Anton Bauer is the only company that makes the mini soft box for onboard camera lights. I still have the softbox and may use it again one day with the DVX if and when I when I ever get an onboard light for it. I don't have a need for it now.

Re: World's Smallest Softbox?

Have you ever put a diffusion filter on a fresnel light? It's the same thing. It changes the nature of the light, but it will still cast shadows because it's still punctual compared to the areas you are lighting. It's not as charming as a big softbox approach, but not as harsh as direct hard light.

spun works probably just as well as that small and instrument and cuts less light output, just not as pretty. (nice pic from the hbo series where they're using the dvx).

Yeah, I've used Tough Spun an Opal Frost, but my favorite in front of a fresnel is Tough Rolux - diffusion with a little less loss of control.
