World War Z Script Review - MAJOR Spoilers

Okay, so I just finished the script for WWZ. While I won't give out my sources, I can tell you that this is a legit copy and it fails on multiple levels.

While I had read that the scope of the film would be EPIC, and like a Children of Men with Zombie, I have to say that it is epic FOR A ZOMBIE MOVIE. Only thing was...you don't see a lot of zombies. After my initial read, I can't understand how anyone in their right mind, let alone someone who has read the book, could ever say that this film does the book justice, or "Captures the best parts of the book." The "Dark Knight" of zombie movies??? Seriously?

No, this is the MINORITY REPORT of Zombie flicks. Screw it, enough BSing, here is the review...

PLOT (Spoilers)

We open on Gerry, who is a UN investigator living in Philly. It opens with a bang as the Battle of Yonkers from the book is transferred to Philly's Franklin Square. We get a quick effect-filled snippet of action before Gerry and his family head off into the wilderness, ala the story of the frozen north from the book (whereby they butcher the creation of the Lobo as something simply welded from a shovel and made to trade with campers in a neighboring town. And thats the only time you see it.)

Suddenly, it's two years later, and Gerry is being assigned by the UN to track down the faults in the system and why the zombie outbreak was so fast and wide spread. Gerry interviews the Chinese doc from the beginning of the book (Mind you, this is almost 40 pages in at this point), then off to Germany to talk to a boat captain who tells the story of the Indian surge to sea aka Zombie jaws scene, then off to Israel where there is a quick blurb about their isolation and then MAGICALLY, like a scene out of a good spy flick, Gerry learns he is being tailed by the CIA, and then gets kidnapped by masked men who wisk him away to interview Paul Radeker. After that, he goes home.

Throughout the script, he MUST know the truth about Franklin Square and what happened, because somehow this ties into the secret of his daughter, who we see in flashback as being sicker than shi* while they were in the frozen north. They build it up like we're going to find out who Kaiser poo pooing Soze is. In the end...it's EXACTLY what happened in the book. Franklin Square is a media-battle gone wrong. That's it. Oh, and the discovery that America had used the Radeker Plan (which we found out during the Redeker story flashback). In the end, the big reveal is that Gerry and his family had resorted to cannibalism to save his daughter's life while she was sick, and that his ten year old daughter now goes Zombie every now and then because she thinks since she ate a person, she must be a zombie. So she tards up, and wears a sign that reads "NOT DEAD."

And that's the end...his daughter wearing a sign saying "NOT DEAD."

She needs to wear a sign that reads "WWZ INO"

I think that World War Z should either be done as a fake documentary or as an HBO miniseries. If they were to go with the fake documentary style, then get someone like Neill Blomkamp who used the fake doco style so well in District 9.

The thing I really love about World War Z as a book, is that you can pretty much pick it up, and randomly open up any chapter, start reading and become sucked in whilst still being able to follow everything even if you hadn't read the earlier chapters. I don't think that a two hour movie will be able to really capture the book in any way that will do it much justice.

In other news, at least we have AMC doing a Walking Dead series with Frank Darabont running the show. I think this is a more exciting prospect than a World War Z film adaptation.
