Working with Super8

Re: Working with Super8

Yeah see I don't like pro8mm, their prices do not seem to competitive..Oh and for film transfers I found an awesome website...its only 12.50 for frame by frame 50' super8 transfers...http://www.filmtransfer.com/ they seem decent...

Re: Working with Super8

I would love an Aaton A-Minima...that would be amazing...I have always loved that camera...ahh super 16...

Re: Working with Super8

The A-minima is an interesting camera, but it's also quite compromised. It's tiny, and it's S-16, but you have to use custom film loads (which means you'll never get short ends or recans, or Fuji stocks), etc. It's a neat camera, but I'd never pick it for a main camera...

Re: Working with Super8

OK, I've spent a lot of time on e-bay recently and I am now the proud owner of two more Beaulieu 5008S systems.

Hot dog! I'm gonna shoot me some Super8 film... ::)

Re: Working with Super8

5008? No, Terry, you're supposed to buy a 7008, and then send it to ME... Oh well, next time... ;)

Apparently Kodak is introducing Vision2 stocks in Super8 soon, which should make for an interesting look. I found 500T way, way too grainy... and 200T was way, way too grainy. But with Vision2 grain, it might be cool.

Re: Working with Super8

Yeah, I didn't see too many 7008's floating around... in fact, none.

I now have a Beaulieu 1008 XL, 4008ZM-II, and three 5008S's.

I guess I need to get in the e-bay game and unload a ton of still photography gear, etc. that I don't use anymore.

I concur that Pro 8mm is extremely overpriced and they want you to send your camera to them and pay them $50 before you can even talk with a tech about repairs.

They don't really want to repair your camera. Rather, they try to sell you on purchasing one of their $2,500 rebuilt jobs.

Thanks for the tips on filmstocks. Where is a good place to buy Super8 film and have it processed and transferred to DV?

Re: Working with Super8

Ok Terry..When are you letting me borrow your 4008 ;D ;D ;D Man..you are like the Super 8 camera owner God Dude GUY..
:D

Re: Working with Super8

I have found a couple places that put super8 and other film to MiniDV. Currently I am speaking with the different people at different companies trying to find the best quality and deal...I will update you on the different companies soon :)

Re: Working with Super8

For buying, I've never found anyplace competitive with Kodak. You can get K40 (including processing now!) for like $13.31 or so... can't be beat.

For transfer, there are a few places you can go. I always used Yale, who I think did an excellent job at a reasonable price, but some people always get off-put by the idea that they'll refuse to transfer material they deem offensive to them. So if you're making a snuff film or porn, don't send it to Yale...

Or you can send it to www.moviestuff.tv, their workprinter & sniper units do a great job and their prices were quite reasonable last time I checked.

Re: Working with Super8

K40?... Kodachrome 40ASA?

I came close to picking up a couple of 2008s on e-bay today. One had a lens and battery, the other had none.

Since I just spent a good li'l chunk on a couple of 5008 systems, I refrained.

I'd never heard of the 2008 until yesterday. From what I've read, it is comparable to the 4008 in terms of features, but it has a manual zoom lens (?).

Re: Working with Super8

Among connoisseurs, the even-numbered cameras were preferred up until the 7008. So, 1008 isn't all that sought after, but 2008 and 4008 are considered quite desirable. 3008 and 5008 don't garner a lot of interest, but the 6008, 7008, and ultra-rare 9008 are the choicest picks of all.

There was an 8008, but it was an 8mm video camera.

And yes, K40 is Kodachrome 40ASA.

Re: Working with Super8

I need to get the battery recelled and make sure it is working.

This could be anywhere from a few weeks to a few months based on cash flow and schedule, but when I do you can borrow it for a week.

Cool?
