Working with sponsers?

Has anyone had any successful sponsership stories and I don't mean free bags of chips. I mean a dealership donating a truck, hardware store donating a generator something along those lines?

I want to get several sponsers (large-scale) is this even feasible if you have everything in order? Is calling up GMC and asking for a cargo van to ambitious or a local dealer to donate a used SUV? (Just examples)

For the plan im writing whats the industry standard for cost per viewers? Sponsers will want to know their getting ad dollars back?

Example plan
Movie appears in 25 festivals = 1000 people per festival = 25,000 eyes total.
What do productions typically offer per view for compensation?

25,000 views at 0.025 cents per eye = $625 worth of ad dollars?
Is 0.025 to low or to high?

In this case I would be telling the catering company $625 worth of advertising?

and so on .. another example I would pitch is the truck you donate will have your dealer name stamped onto the window, the truck will be driven around the city for X amount of days with estimated projections of 600,000 views over that period of time at.

etc etc ..

Ideas & Input would be nice.

You have to show them hard data with ratings or blow them away enough to gamble on you and man, thats tough.
I bagan by aquiring sponsors though the very swap deals you are trying to avoid. I made videos in exchange for parts for my car, type of deal. I nrtured these relationships to a point they became monthly monitary sponsors. I still have not scored a car but have talked with Dodge enough that it will certainly happen once I have ratings/viewers to offer. Networks usually sell these deals but if you can sell one on your own, man you can just buy airtime and skip the middle man.
my sponsor page, if it helps at all:

I think the biggest part of this is relationship vs. cold calling. You are trying to cold call and get someone to part with their money. Very very tough. Have you ever parted with any of your money when a stranger has come calling? It seems to me that grinner, on the other hand, has put in the time and been around his dealers enough to build up some credibility, trust, and all the other intangibles that are needed to form a relationship. And it looks like he is now getting results. In my experience, relationships count big time when it comes to getting someone to part with their money/widget in exchange for you telling them what you are going to do with it.
Still...it will never happen if you don't try :)

very good point. You'll be making pro-bono vids to aquire sponsors. This goes without saying.

All five of my long form projects have been "sponsored". Sponsorship included equipment and cash. In looking back on the four projects we have completed ( the fifth one starts in January '09 in the bayous south of NOLA), they all worked solely because of the relationships my partner had with the decision maker at each of the companies. I was and largely still am an outsider, who never would have gotten the time of day from any of the decision makers.

As above though, it will NEVER happen if you don't try. Have a go at it, make your pitch and revise according to the objections that person brings up and keep on going. One pleasant side effect of doing this is that soon you will have no fear of selling and so will be very qualified for just about any sales job out there :)
