Working with P2 Files = getting no audio....

I'm using FCPro 6, and Footage from the HVX in 1080/24pA and importing my files from my P2 cards from panasonics 5-card slot reader (PCD20 I think it's called)
and the computer is a mac pro desktop computer (with 12GB Ram and 2 T/B of HD space, so that shouldn't be the problem)

I copy the files over to my HD usingf P2CMS2 (or whatever it's called...it's the recommended one from Barry Green from another thread).

Now, my problem is when I go to import files into FCP , and I choose to import the video files (MXL ...or maybe it was MXF, I forget and am not at home to check as I type this) I get only video and no audio.

FCP also warns me saying it's not a native FCP file and I should use media manager...

So when I try to import the XML file instead, FCP tells me to find a translation file for it...and I don't know what to do.

I'm asking what the recommended P2 workflow is for you guys using P2 and FCPro? Do I have to sync all the audio separately? but that doesn't make sense as in the p2cms2 viewer I can play clips as I shot them w/audio...

a little help please.

FCP doesn't allow you to work directly with the MXF files, they force you to convert the files into their proprietary quicktime format. You have two choices: bow to their demands and use the Log & Transfer function to convert, or spend $195 and get www.dvfilm.com's Raylight program, which will allow you to directly edit without having to convert the files.

Thanks for the reply. Barry.

I'm going to buy raylight...but when I get the money in a couple weeks, for the footage I have now I'll have to bow down to FCP's commands...

Would I log and transfer straight from the P2 cards? (after I put them into the 5-slot reader) or log and transfer and grab the files in the contents folder that were copied to my HD ?

ALWAYS back up your P2 cards. ALWAYS. This files are your camera masters...so you want to back them up, then LOG AND TRANSFER. YOu don't capture from tapes then reuse the tapes do you? or throw them out? I hope not.

When you get Raylight (Or HDLog...it does this too, and allows you to map metadata to columns in FCP) then you copy the footage you have backed up onto your media drive, THEN use Raylight. You always want to NOT work on the masters.

Bow down to Apples method. I have never seen it that way. i have always used that process as a way to view my footage and give it proper clip names. As an editor you need to know your footage, and this is a great way to do that. Unless you are in a BIG hurry, then Raylight and HD Log are your go to software.
