working with one 4gb p2?

and have so far just used minidv or direct to computer for recording

jelloshotsrule: what modes have you been able to record direct to computer? Is your computer a mac or pc? what program are you using? I'd like to know how to record 720p/24 direct to computer.

thanks!

i've successfully recorded both 720p 24fps, and 1080i... i forget all the details of what we tried though. i was using a dual 2.5 g5, with fcp 5.0.4

if you want me to test anything specifically, let me know and i'll try to do it sometime soon (maybe today, otherwise probably not til early next week)

hope that helps!

I also have a G5 Quad with fcp 5.0.4

I would really appreciate the details of recording directly to the computer in 720p/24 and any other HD mode.

Tahnk so much for your help!

tell me what you want me to test, specifically.. which modes and framerates, etc... and i'll do my best. as for the actual procedure, should be able to find a pretty good walkthrough of how to do it on the forum somewhere (that's what i used!!)...

Although Barry is right with regards to having no downtime with swapping 2 4gig cards... but for me, I would definately use 1 8gig card vs. 2 4gigs

Reason:
If you plan on using an external hard drive to dump from your camera's P2 via firewire, the hard drive can only record 15 sessions per drive... so for example: a) 8gig card x 15 = 120gig hard drive (which is about 120 minutes of video at the highest quality per drive) b) 4gig card x 15 = 60gig hard drive (60 minutes of video) ... and will have unused space for any larger hard drive.

For me this is soooooo important because this is my method of pulling video from my P2 card... beats carrying around double the hard drives!!!

very true. The reason I've decided to just stick with the single 8GB card is more workflow oriented: since I do most of my own film work, I'd rather offload less, and even with 2 4GB cards, I realized that means more times I need to stop filming to put the card in my laptop and offload. In the end, I don't think the overall time saved would really be that great.

I look at the offload time with one 8GB card like a quick break for my actors and crew, or a prep period to prepare for another scene. :)

what is it that limits you to 15 sessions per drive? so if i have a 4 gb card, and a 250 gb drive to offload to... i can still only get 60 gb on it? why? hmmm

well we got one yesterday, looking forward to using it! thanks spec-comm!

This limit is only if you use the HVX to transfer via firewire. The HVX creates a new partition for each card that it offloads. Due to limitations of the HVX or the drive the limit of partitions on a drive is 15. So you get eother 15 4gb partitions or 15 8gb partitions depending on the size of your cards.

in case you're looking for a non-firewire option, I really enjoy a USB OTG case I picked up. You put a 5400 2.5 inch hard drive inside and you're ready to go. It comes with a battery holder that accepts 4 x AA batteries. It lets you know if you get a copy error, and the only time this happened to me was when I unplugged it while it was still going. (I just plugged it back in, started the transfer again, and it worked fine)

so far, it's been great.

I can film for 10 minutes in 24PN, then a dump from camera to the device takes 8 minutes. I use this downtime for rehearsal, rearranging, thinking about blocking, adjusting lighting, talking to your actors, whatever. I don't think I've ever just sat around idle during this shooting time.

It is really close to a film workflow (if you're used to shooting without an asst.) but instead of a film change it's a P2 download to a disk.

I have the exact same enclosure -- I have been unable to get it to do anything -- it won't install on my Win2k system as a removable drive (there is an error with the driver, according to Windows...). When I try to copy from the camera, it always gives me the "copy err"... The same happens when I try to copy from a flash drive. I think I got a bad enclosure, though it is possible my drive is bad...

hmm...that's a bummer...I really like mine. I'd imagine it's the hard drive though, because it sounds like the device is functioning correctly if it gives you the COPY ERR message. wierd that it won't even let you format it.
I use a mac, but I doubt that has anything to do with it.

what other options are there besides transferring through the hvx? just using a p2 card reader or something like the p2store? also, if one were to transfer from the hvx to one drive, and then transfer to yet another drive, would the partition issue be irrelevant? so i could theoretically create the 15 partitions (x 4gb each)... then just take all the data and copy it to another drive separately? or am i missing something?

also, what happens if you copy to a drive that already has data on it? ie, transferring the files from p2 to an hdd that has stuff on it already...

thanks!

I'm switching my order from the 8GB card to two 4GB cards, then I can just get to filming.

Question for Barry and other proponents of the 2 card workflow: What do you offload in the field with? Is there a cheap and automated solution so that I can do the "continuous shooting" workflow without having to purchase one of the Panasonic P2 card readers or having my laptop on call every 7 minutes of shooting (cause I'll be offloading myself, and it might get difficult to manage both filming, protecting my laptop, and making sure the offloading and reformatting is working correctly).

Everyone on this forum has been immensely helpful with everything, and I thank everyone for their time and advice. :)
