Working with muzzle flashes

Im curious to know if you have to always composite muzzle flashes in over green screen? Or if you can take the detanation film flashes and put them in AE or so on, and put them over your regular film and make them a matt? Can someone send me in the right direction.

Yeah no green screen required. There are a few sources for really great muzzle flashes that already have a good alpha channel, or just make your own. Either way just an overlay and some tweaking in AE will do it. THere are some great tutorials that explain it much better than that though.

just try to mix them up a bit. One muzzle flash can be warped and color corrected to look like several.
