Working with imported QT files in FCP

Hoping someone in the dvxuser community may be able to help me out. I am working on an edit using Quicktime files pulled from a dvd using mac the ripper and then converted with mpeg streamclip. Converted files are standard H264 720x480 that FCP should not have any problem working with but for some reason it is crashing like crazy. Basically, every time i try to fastforward through a clip in the viewer the program crashes. I work at an advertising agency and we are always working with footage pulled from dvd's etc to put together videos to show clients how a spot or idea may work (for internal use only so copyright not an issue).

I am working on a 2008 MacBook Pro and even using the high performance video card setting so i don't see why FCP would have such a problem working with these files (600 mb) that i have even put on a scratch drive cause thought that may be the issue.

I have a feeling that it is because i am not actually capturing any media into fcp but rather just importing the quicktimes. I have had problems working with other quicktimes that were not pulled from dvd as well and were much smaller.

Is there a better way to bring these into fcp? Any help would be much appreciated thanks.

H264 isnt the best codec to edit with.
expect LONG render times.

instead when exporting from MPEG Streamclip- match your seq. settings

there is a similar post just made:

hope that helps!

Great. Thanks for your help Shawn. Makes sense. I will try a DV codec and hopefully will have better results.
