I have read almost every thread on DVX user on this issue, but still have some questions that pertain to my specific workflow. We currently shoot all of our footage in DVCPRO HD on an HVX200. We import the footage into SD projects and export about 15 hours a week as SD avi's. Right now we export using a 2 core intel PC and an hour long project takes about 3 hours to export using PPCS3. The projects as simple footage. The most complicated transitions are simple cross fades. So, my questions are these:
We want to puchase a new system to speed up render times and are weighing cost vs. time savings issues. We can spend what we want on the system, but will not spend 8k on a system that only decreases our rendering times 10% over a 4K system. Hopefully that makes sense. So, do we spend the money on a dual quad core xeon system or is there a more cost effective solution that will do the job.
Second, should we stick with xp 32 bit or go with vista 64?
Finally, we capture directly to hard disk in HD at a rate of 15 hours a week. That means that we fill up about 1 TB of hard disk space every week with raw footage. With our current system, we can not edit our HD footage (even in the SD project) in real time without rendering. Is it possible to render HD in real time without the use of a RAID system? Buying enough hard drives to make RAID work when we are going through 2 TB a month gets kind of complicated.
Thanks in advance for your help.
