Working With Audio

Hey guys,

I was wondering how do you guys handle the audio of your finished product. Do you just export straight from the timeline with the audio tracks the way they are, or do you mix your audio down into a stereo track and then export out to whatever format you would normally do? If so, how do you go about doing that?

A while back I made a DVD that some of the audio tracks (a few vocal and some sound fx) ran into some issues of certain audio pieces not playing correctly (to low, no sound at all, coming out one speaker). Everything played fine on my computer and even in some of my DVD players, but in other players, it would mess up. I want to avoid this as I am looking to get some stuff sold through online distribution, and I don't want any customers to have problems with their DVDs.

Thanks in advance!

Your mix doesn't work well on other systems because you're probably not using a reference audio monitor in a sound treated room. All consumer speakers will color the sound you hear to make it better, but this is not an accurate picture of what the sound is like. A reference speaker gives you a flat response that's closer to what you'll hear. Proper speaker placement and a well treated room helps as well. Do a search on reference speaker for some recommendations.

If you're distributing DVD then you might want to think about doing a replication. Basically a DVD duplication house will produce a glass master of your DVD that'll guarantee that none of your disks will have error. Doing it yourself (duplication) will cause some DVD to not work with other systems.

Thanks Jade,

I plan on going through CustomFlix, and I had read up on their requirements for DVD's, and just wanted to double check. I haven't had any issues authoring DVD's the past year, but before that I know I had trouble with the audio in some DVD's I was doing in some players. Just always double checking. ;)
