Working with an Ad Agency

well depends on what type of agency it is. agency of record, specialized,...? small agency or big agency?

- small agency: sure flood them w/ reels, phone calls,...

- big agency: go to the lavish parties and talk w/ people who call the shots. maybe try looking for a directors rep.. you may find your answer along the lines of this website http://www.aicp.com/

I highly recommend a book called, "Deal Making in the Film and Television Industry" by George Avernakis (Or something like that).

While a few years old (Media he mentions is slightly outdated) the concepts of selling and maintaining media relationships are huge.

Anyway, I highly recommend it.

Having spent my life as a writer at ad agenices, it's pretty simple. If the agency is large enough, contact the executive producer on staff (or any producer for that matter). They'll want your reel -- if you impress them enough, they'll set up a screening for you to show your reel to the creative teams.

At smaller agencies, you may have to bug the creative director or even the creatives themselves.

I know sending reels is expensive, but I always check out a DVD when someone sends me one -- especially if the packaging looks professional.

You're in Portland, right? I know there are a few big shops up there that will definitely have on-staff producers. Wieden, Borders Perrin, Cole & Weber/Red Cell to name a few. You'll have to be top-notch to get a gig from them, but I've yet to meet a producer who wasn't willing to look at someone new. They just might not look at them for very long. :)

Good luck!
