Working with a casting director

I've been looking around haven't found anything yet about how to work with a casting director. I'm shooting a student film in a few months and live about an hour from the nearest major city (and casting calls are only attended by students no matter where they're advertised here)

A role I'm looking for needs to be a rough mid-30s male, not someone I can find on campus (an acting one anyway). Having not been to the nearest city much, I'm certain to run into a lot of problems trying to hold an open casting call myself. So, now is the first time I thought about hiring a casting director in the city, however I wasn't quite sure how they work or what salary to expect for finding one role. Do they usually have lots of actors and it's just a matter of finding the ones that fit what I want in the role and then setting up auditions? Any advice would be great.

Thanks.
