well i've never had to claim before, I asked once about it when the gaffer tripped over my boom cable and pulled over my sound table. Luckily the only damage was the metal peice between the pistol grip and the basket, £30 for a new one. But when I asked about insurance they said the excess was £500 so there would be no point in even trying to claim for anything less than 1K or so.
Actually now I think about it there was another time when I pulled over the camera with my cord and it landed lens down in the sand.
the lens and everything was fine but I pulled off the xlr housing (sonyz1). It was very embarrasing escpecially since we were interviewing one of the top top sound recordists of our age. Anyway the insurance company said they wouldn't pay out for the damage, something to do with neglect, but after weeks and weeks of hammering them, they eventually did pay out. It is ridiculous, I remember thinking god, If they don't insure you against that kind of thing, then what the hell DO they insure you for!?
For the humid shoot we were shooting on 35mm so there were no tape heads to consider, but the loader was really worried about the stock in those conditions but everything was fine, He managed to load the mags away from the damp, but still in the heat. we aclimatised all the kit in the environment for about 45mins. The DP said if you look at the primes its a good indication that the camera itself is ok.
