Working in Guangzhou

Hello all,

This is my first thread, so I hope everything works out allright...

I have am in talks to go to Guangzhou, China to teach cinematography, but under what auspices, I am not sure. I was wondering if anyone on these boards has ever worked in and around Guangzhou, or lives in and around Guangzhou and could give me a bit of insight into the area/the industry there. This is sort of a time sensitive issue, so any insight would be helpful. Thanks all!

The most specific thread EVER!!! Talk about a niche market thread. Maybe you should start with "Have you ever worked in Asia?" first and then move onto "China" and then "Guangzou". hehehehehe :) There's a few people on this site who have worked in Hong Kong, not sure about the area you specified.

Im in Asia... specifically Tokyo, so some way from where your going. I have been to Guangzhou for a week training, but a number of years ago. Was a nice city back then.... not sure about now. Guangzhou has a colonial past so some of that still remains with western architecture.

Dude, go! If you hate it come back. Asia is amazing. I've traveled a bit but not in China. I lived in Taiwan for two years and I'll tell you, leaving Asia was one of the hardest things I've had to do.

GO!!!

Are you insane?

GO!!!

I lived in China for a few years. On the little information you provided I would say it sounds like a great opportunity. I would do it.

EDIT: Justin PM me. I've got a friend in China who can probably give you specific information on Guangzhou.

Thanks all. My biggest concern at this point is not the traveling bit, I lived in Italy for a while, spent quite some time in Peru, yada yada yada. Anyhow, I mostly interested in what type of organization I'll be working for, and what they're agenda is. I'm also interested in what type of housing they're providing. I don't want to show up, and find out I'm going to be sharing communal housing with some other dudes for like three months. Anyhow, I'll keep you cats posted about what happens.

I have traveled to Guangzhou on business (to design a series of DVD products for a manufacturer there) a few years back, and even once did a Saturday morning radio talk show on the subject of DVD (this was in mid 1998 when it was a new concept there). Its not far from Hong Kong (by train or car) and was a very active region with a good amount of consumer goods and services. This sounds like an interesting opportunity and if it is at the right time in your life to consider such a move, I can't think of any reason not to give it some serious thought.

Have you spent anytime in this part of the world before?

Can you make a trip there to check it out first?

Got any better offers here?

Best of luck on this and let us know what happens.

No, I've spent considerable time in Europe, and South America, but never in Asia, though I am fairly well versed in the culture. I have solid offers here, but I've never really been interested in teaching... until I found out I might be able to do so in China. Guangzhou is also sort of on the cusp of a new cinema revolution, and I would love to be there to help it get its sea legs.

Edit~> Hey, I broke 100! Rock! I can now vote for scifest films!
