Hey everyone. I currently own an HMC 150, and have a Canon 7D on the way. So as it travles to me I need to get the PC prepared for it! My pc is an i7 920 6 gb of ddr 3 ram. So all the pc spec is fine ect.
Editing on premier ro cs3 (will upgrade once CS5 is out)
My main concern is how can i edit with both cameras. I need to convert the HMC's AVCHD footage, as well as Cnon 7D h.264 format into "something". Thats my question is what is the BEST format to use, where it doesnt ridiciously have a insane ammount of storage ect.

I want to be able to quickly editing in my timeline scim through very precisely. Storage isnt a huge concern if i have to sacrafice that i will go out and buy a few HDDs as long as my edits run smooth without crashes. When i was using my HMC150 and used the main concept AVCHD transcoder to --> P2DCProHD towards the end of my short film it would crash for no given reason, not sure if its cuz of that format or what but i wanna get away from that if that is the case.

I'm willing tobuy a GOOD program to get good results for converting these formats. Any help appreciated thanks everyone. I think that was everything... Oh & it's a Feature Film we are doing so, gotta be prepared ;)

the simplest way ive found is to transcode to cinefom neoscene - think you can get it for $89 at videoguys ($10 discount with code, cant remenber code right now). it will transcode both cameras footage to visually lossless avi's.
there are free workarounds using dnxhd codec & mpeg streamclip but these will be mov files which dont play quite so smoothly on my timeline though your computer may play nicer
hopefully cs5 with cuda graphics card will play both formats natively & smoothly but if you are applying effects, transitions, grading cineform may still be the best way to go

Great ill probably go with cineform neoscene if you sware by it ;)

So it truely is professional to use somthing like that? No quality loss? What about space?

@ade4all - Thanks! Just grabbed the trial version to convert some 5D II footage for editing in CS4. I like the fact that it does batch encode! Plays back smooth in both PPRO and Window Media player.

@shadowknight123 - The $10 off code is: REGTEN (check out "retail me not" for other code, they have some 5%, etc..)

You can also download a trial version for 7-days to make sure it works for you: http://estore.cineform.com/downloads.aspx

Just a heads up that the converted files from the Canon will be about twice the size of the original. A few examples:

before | after
23 MB | 56 MB
117 MB | 306 MB
247 MB | 490 MB

I also tried converting some GoPro HERO footage and the .avi files were significantly larger!

before | after
357 MB | 3.4 GB
654 MB | 5.7 GB

Cool, glad it helped! Unfortunately they don't have the serial key delivery automated, so you will need to wait until Monday before they send it to you.
