Workflow using an external hard drive

I was wondering if someone could help clarify something for me. Instead of using a P2 store to download my P2s, I am downloading directly from the camera to a 1 terabit hard drive. In Barry's HVX book I think he mentions that downloading a 16 gig card regardless if it has 16 gigs or not will take up 16 gigs of space on the hard drive. Is this correct?

Thanks.

This is not something I do, but wanted to weigh in because no one else has, Your logic is kind of correct, I believe, for the P2 store or for a camera controled fw400 or USB 'OTG' HDD. These are cases where the HDD is partitioned based on P2 file sizes.

When downloading to an external HDD through a computer, size will match what you shoot.

The biggest drawback to the camera controlling the HDD is that you don't know for sure if everything copied correctly, except in the case of USB OTG, where the drive verifies the contents.

thanks jason.

isn't there a verify switch you can turn on that will allow the HVX to check that everything is intact after its completed the download?
