Workflow Question

We shoot a lot of video with a 7D and AF100. Most of the time, we record audio externally to our h4n.

When we get to premiere pro, usually I will take a video clip, drag it into the main timeline, and sync up the matching audio clip from the h4n. Once it is synced, I then nest it so I am able to cut with that synced clip throughout the sequence without having to re-sync up audio each and every time.

However, when we go to finish in AE, this causes quite a problem when trying to reference clips side by side in the timeline for color correction. Because of the nesting, it makes it impossible to view side by side clips to adjust them.

Does anyone know a better workflow?

I'm not sure I understand your issue exactly. Can you be more specific? It's very vague..

One thing that stands out is...why are you recording audio to the H4N when the AF100 has professional XLR inputs?

Also, what are you using for CC? Most CC can be done in Premiere without needing to go to AE. Can you give an example of your step by step process?

Sure Phil.

The AF100 is new, however we come from an HVX workflow background. We record to the h4n cause it musch better quality sound even when using the xlr inputs.

My question has to do with the process of lining up external sound and video clips.

For example, if I am shooting an interview and record using a 7D and an h4n, i will have a video clip (with sound), and an external sound clip.

Let's say I want to use multiple takes of the interview spliced with broll.

Each interview take with have an external sound clip via the h4n.

My procedure for this has been to take each take of the interview and line them up with the matching sound clip. Then, I nest that sequence, so I can cut it as desired, without having to resync up the audio each time i want to use a certain section of the take.

Once I have a final cut, I open AE, and import the sequence. Mostly I do this to add in any final graphics, throw on a look, etc. The problem is with nested sequences, it is impossible to reference back to back clips side by side.

Yes, we can use dynamic link and not go to AE, but even with that process, there are certain restrictions when using dynamic link and nesting sequences.

Im just looking for the best work flow process (via dynamic link or finishing in AE) when working with separate video and audio clips that need to sync.

Does this clear it up?

There are two suggesti9ons I can make here.

One is to upgrade to CS5.5 and use the Merge Clips feature for syncing. This will eliminate the need to nest.

The second is to pick up Magic Bullet Colorista II and Looks 2.0. Use them inside of PP, and this eliminates the need to Link.

Appreciate the response Jim. We have upgraded to CS5.5, but this is the first Im hearing of the merge clips feature. I will look more into that. Sounds awesome.

And yes, the reason we are not in CS5.5 yet is cause we have not upgraded our Magic Bullet Suite from CS5. On the list to be done soon. Just picked up an AF100, Voightlander f0.95 25mm, and an advantajib, so I had to watch our spending for this quarter. :)

Thanks!

Get the software called "DUALEYES" and do the sync automatically before importing to Premiere. You have the option of replacing the audio recorded to the video files with the audio recorded from the H4N. Then just import as usual. This is the workflow I use and it's much easier than nesting and all that mess.

Thanks for the respons Richard. Do you mean "PluralEyes"? That may work for the AF100, but I believe there was a syncing issue with DSLR footage (canon 7D) and plural eyes.

No, I mean DualEyes. It works with DSLR footage like a dream. Was a beta tester for Singular Software when they were developing it, and have been using it for about 2 years now. http://www.singularsoftware.com/dualeyes.html

Pluraleyes is a NLE plugin design more for syncing video clips to a long audio clip, like for a music video or multicam project. Dualeyes is stand-alone and allows you to prep/sync the footage prior to importing to Premiere.

Thanks Richard. YOu have saved me a ton of time. I'm going to try the 30 day trial and then get it if it works like the video shows. Looking forward to it. Appreciate your time.
