Workflow question. Please Suggest...

Hi gang! You guys have bailed me out before. So, I am turning to you again.

I am in the process of editing my sister's wedding video with Premiere Pro 1.5. I have about 200 gigs of hard drive space. However, I am just about done with ONE chapter and have already used up a tremendous amount of space. For starters, I know capturing footage is space-consuming, obviously. But, I have re-rendered A LOT of clips separately, for various reasons, and I think that is taking up a lot of my space. I'd like to free up this space. And, my question has to do with workflow and being able to free up this space. As an aside, I do not have a DVD encoder software to package this video, when it's complete, but I will be getting something shortly....

My question is, when I once and for all, complete this Godforsaken chapter that has taken me ages, may I render it out as an AVI (it always seems to want to render as an MPEG 4) may I delete ALL of my source files to start fresh with a new chapter? I'd like to free up space but I want to make sure that once this chapter is rendered out, I can bring it back to whatever DVD authoring software I get and export it as an MPEG 2 or whatever I need to so her DVD player can view it.

Please advise-
Rick

Do not delete source files until you are sure you have finished with them.

Export an avi ( once you have finished editing). This is your Master Copy ( Tip:Use Lossless / Do not recompress).

Check the avi for faults / problems.

At this stage you can make a mpeg from the avi if you want and have the application to do so. You now have two masters ( the avi will be of better quality than the mpeg) and if you have checked them and are happy. DELETE the SOURCE Files.

Depending on your authoring application. Import whichever one you want. There is an advantage in either. (I would use the mpeg).

Your alternative for Hdrive space saving is to use the project manager once you have gone through the steps above.

Shooter, thanks so much. I just so desperately want this chapter complete and these files deleted that it's driving me to drink. I will do that. When I finally this get chapter problem free, I will re-render as an MPEG then delete the source files.

To make room on your HDD, you can also delete your rendered files. The playback will be jumpy (if you have lots of effects), but your edits will actually go faster.

When you delete your source files, don't delete the references from your project. That way, it's easier if you need to re-capture for any reason.

Sumfun, So, what you are saying is that if I capture tapes 1-5, for example, as long as I don't delete these files, I should be fine? Sometimes, I re-render a clip then bring it back in. So, I was afraid to delete pretty much anything, especially re-rendered clips, while I was still working on a chapter. I was afraid of getting that "offline" edit.

In order to make room on your disk, you have to delete the source files. So if you captured tapes 1-5, you would highlight these clips, select unlink files, then select delete files. So now the clips are offline, and you have to recapture them again if you want to use them. But at least you keep all your edit decisions.

If you want to have the clips available online, then use the project manager. It will trim unused segments off your clips. Make sure you leave some handles in case you want to re-edit later. Then you can delete the original clips.

rlm7189, i don't know why you are rendering out clips from PPro and bring them back again. Instead of doing this i reccomend you to read about Nested Sequences in the PPro manual.

Using Nested Sequences in PPro is really powerful and you don't have to render clips out of PPro and bring them back again= saves HDD space, saves time! :)

Sorry to bring back an old thread but I have a quick follow up question. Today, I was informed that I should not render out the chapters as AVI or QUICKTIME files because the quality is actually not the best. This person suggested I render out the entire chapter as a TIFF sequence then, by using DVD encore, exporting to DVD as an MPEG2. Just to verify, is this correct? Obviously, I would like to preserve as much quality as I can.

Thanks!
Rick

an AVI will be fine for your purposes. You will end up as an mpeg in your DVD whatever you do.

Do not recompress your avi ( Check the Option) in Video Settings
