Workflow needed for DVCPRO100 using Vegas..

Ok, the clock is ticking, the HVX200 should be out within the next 2 months.
I wish Sony would support this codec, but there has been no mention of it.

I really enjoy Vegas, but need a workflow to bring DVCPRO100 into Vegas without losing quality.

I'm sure I'm not the only one here thinking about this.

Initially, I'm shooting for the upcoming HD-DVD/Blu-ray HD format (I beliieve H.264). I also plan the downconvert to SD.

Assuming Sony doesn't plan on supporting HVX200's DVCPRO100 MXF files, can someone outline a good work flow on converting the MXF files to a useable format to bring into vegas for real time editing (without losing quality)?

Thank you, Steve

This has been talked about quite a bit.

There are no definitive answers right now.

There's a glimmer of hope, however, that MainConcept may develop a codec which will allow it.

Thanks David,
Yes, I was emailed a response from MainConcept on their support for DVCPRO100. Let's hope it will be compatible with the HVX200's MXF files and
can be used within Vegas.

In the meanwhile, I was wondering if there might be a work around, probably more time consuming but possible?

You can use Avid's Quicktime DVCPRO codecs, but it will be a bear, and you can only work with Quicktime (ugh) if you do.

If using AVID's Quicktime DVCPRO codecs, will there be a loss in quality, or
is it just an issue of speed?

Thanks, Steve

Avid's codec is a native DVCPRO-HD codec developed in cooperation with Panasonic, so it'll be 100% native quality.

To get the files converted from Op-Atom MXF into .avi, you can use the FocusInfo file converter tool. Alternately, you can use DVFilm Maker software, the newest version is promising support for DVCPRO-HD for Premiere Pro and Vegas users.

Yeah, I'm not sure exactly what Maker does, it sounds like it does exactly what we want (converts an .MXF into a DVCPRO-HD-native .AVI or .mov). I think it may also transcode to CineForm so you could then edit using the CineForm intermediate codec -- maybe that'd be a faster, more real-time way to edit than using the Avid DV100 codec?

It's preliminary anyway -- I don't think they've got it finished, but Marcus has always been the first to provide solutions, and I'm sure he'll be first again. There will be a solution, and you will be able to edit the footage from the HVX in Vegas or Premiere Pro for sure. I guess it remains to be seen how practical that workflow is; obviously it would be infinitely superior to just drop the .MXF files on the timeline, but that's up to Sony and Adobe to implement. But even if they don't, Marcus van Bavel of DVFilm is going to help us out!

Focus makes a File Converter program for P2 MXF that converts the .MXF files into .avi, .mov, .omf, and raw DV files also. So using that, with the Avid codec installed, should also get you where you're trying to go...

I don't know if the Avid codec is available in Vegas to an .avi-encoded file. If it is, we're pretty much there already -- we just may all need to upgrade to David's dual-core dual-processor hyperthreaded AMD 4400 to run it, but hey...

I don't see it as an option for .avi render -- but as I have no way to test whether a timeline will accept and edit such an .avi, that's inconclusive at best.

In any case, these are hopeful signs -- and yes, an upgrade of hardware may not only be warranted, it may be necessary.

(But who doesn't want to upgrade their hardware? An excuse like this is a Christmas present . . . )

It doesn't appear to be. It only shows when you select a Quicktime mov file?

Thanks Barry for the Firestore File converter and DVFilm Maker info!

It looks like there will be workarounds. Let's HOPE Sony offers P2 support.
