Workflow from Premiere to AE

Hey guys,

I'm pretty much a beginner and have been using premiere to edit my clips. I find it very difficult to do credit animations on it, it has a mind of its own sometimes. I just want to know how people add their effects from premiere in AE.

Do you do a final edit with colour grading then export a lossless file as well as a proxy file. Import that into AE do all your effects with the proxy then swap over to lossless clip and export? Or do you import the Premiere project into AE then do it that way? My laptop isn't super fast so I am after a workflow that will give me decent preview playback when working.

Thanks in advance.

Good Evening Mr. Fanny.

I'm just off to bed, but I'll give you the compressed version of my workflow. I'm sure you'll get
some more detailed responses here.

I do my rough editing in Premiere (I used CS3) then export the clips as Uncompressed AVI files.
I bring the uncompressed files into After Effects and do any effects work I need to (keying, etc)
then render it out. Those files I bring back into the Premiere project and put them on another
video track. I do my colour correcting in Premiere. But you could use AE.

Hope that helps. By exporting it uncompressed I see no loss in quality.

I make rough cuts in Premiere, copy and paste them into AE, complete all work in AE, and export from AE. Before using this work flow, I used to create and render clips in AE and import them into Premiere. It was a time waster and almost always degraded the quality (even when using so-called lossless codecs). In short, the more comfortable you become with AE, the less you'll need to lean on Premiere and the happier you'll be with your results.

thanks guys.

Peter - i find it easier to edit in premiere than AE but I find it easier to do effects in AE..lol It sounds like my considered workflow is similar. What are your settings for uncompressed AVI?

Jordan - so you can simply copy from the Premiere timeline and paste into AE? It wouldn't keep effects would it? that would be pretty cool if you could.

I have tried the exporting from AE back to premiere for credits and I always seem to loose fquality and sharpness. On the other hand if I import an AE project through bridge its spot on.

Dynamic Link is a great feature of the Adobe Suite. You can move seamlessly
between AE and PP w/o having to render files (until you're ready).

Good luck.
