Wordpress Mobile

Mark Harris

Pain in the ass
So I've spent the day working on ways to promote my film across mobile devices. Been working on an iPhone app. But in the process, I've found a really nice wordpress plugin, that will automagically make a mobile version of your wordpress site and redirect mobile devices to that version. It has its own theme as well, which can be customized like any other. Also has some more config options for which devices should be directed to the mobile version.

WORDPRESS MOBILE EDITION

This allows you to get at least somewhat rolling on mobile platforms with no additional cost, and very little time and effort. At least until you can get that iPhone/Android app done...

For any filmmakers out there who don't know wordpress, it's a very nice blog platform that can be customized to serve just about any site, with a strong admin GUI, and about a million plugins for every kind of functionality you can imagine, from video embedding, to forum, to mobile browser serving. Also has auto-updating and plugin installs for most plugins.

Been using it for several years, and it makes setting up and managing your web presence really nice.

CHECK IT

Awesome find, Mark - thanks for sharing.
We're been wanting to figure out a way to offer a mobile version of Project Rant... but given that neither of us are programmers we were a bit stumped. Looks like this might just do the trick.

What are the required features of a hosting plan that will allow wordpress to work?

I use FrontPage now. If I use wordpress to host my website, can I use my own domain name?

Thanks for sharing this info.

Wordpress can be installed on any host that supports PHP and MySQL, which is about every host nowadays.

They have a section here that gives good info on hosting:

http://wordpress.org/hosting/

Many places now offer "auto-install" so it's super easy.

There are many CMS packages around, but I've found WP to be one of the best supported, and the development is very active. They release new versions all the time, and as I said, there is a plugin for about anything you'd want to now.

Found a couple more cool plugins. We're going to experiment with two tiers of access to the site. The public access will just put out info about the story of the film. We won't put any BTS on there, because we'd like the public only to interact with the content of the film.

Then we'll have a "filmmakers'" access which will give BTS stuff, making-of, stuff interesting really only to filmmakers.

In the course of setting this up, I discovered a couple more good plugins:

OPENID - This allows you to let people log into your site with their openID. OpenID is attempting to be a standardized auth method.

Then I found this one: FACEBOOK CONNECT PLUGIN - there are actually several of them out there now. As I'm sure many of you have seen, sites are starting to allow you to log in with your Facebook credentials. Now, you can start adding the same functionality to your own site very easily.

I like these things because they might encourage more people to sign up, if they don't have to fill out one more profile, create one more username and password, etc.
