Won't recognize my DVX!

Why is it that FCS2 will recognize my 8 year old JVC handy cam, and all my external harddrives, but not my DVX100A? I don't get it. I've ruled out the cable being defective, the firewire port couldn't be blown, why wouldn't it recognize it?

Another thing, I cannot find firewire 400 to 800 cables ANYWHERE. I need to start editing now, is there any disadvantage to dumping onto my Macs harddrive and then transferring that to my scratch disk afterwards? I'm a n00b to all things Mac so I'm trying my best to figure this out lol. I have 25 hours of video to capture for a feature-length I'm working on.

Thanks

What mac are you on? I've heard there's issue's with the newer imacs and the dvx. There's a workaround, so if this is the case, I'll search for the thread that had the fix and point you in the right direction.

Let me know...

EDIT: HERE it is

I'm on the new intel iMac, but I've figured a away around it. I plugged the camera directly into the ext. hard-drive. I've never dumped video directly to an external hard-drive before, lol. (Duh) Then I captured some video with my capture presets set for 2:3:3:2 pulldown removal and the sequence preset at NTSC DV (29.97). My video plays back twice as fast as the audio, so I have a feeling I've mixed the presets up :( I'm going to try this again. I understand that it needs to be captured at 29.97 to allow for proper pulldown removal. I shot 24PA and I can't get this to work.

I'm sure I'll figure it out though. Thanks for your help Ryan.

Sounds like your capture setting are correct. Now... FCP gets kind of buggy with these settings, so I'll bet I have your answer.

Find your captured clip in the capture scratch>open it with "cinema tools"> click "analyze" and make sure it says 23.98 fps> hit "conform">conform to 23.98 (yes, I realize it's already at this frame rate, but sometimes FCP has a hard time getting it correct)>press enter.

Go back to FCP, and your problem should be solved.

:(

I tried conforming everything with cinema tools. For one, it appears to be quite a tedious task considering I have so many clips, and two - it didn't change anything. I went to easy set up and chose the "advanced pulldown 2:3:3:2 removal NTSC DV" option and all the setting appeared to be fine. The sequence preset was 23.93 and the video was being captured at 29.97... The video plays back just fine on quicktime, but not on FCP. Could this have anything to do with the DVX? I know I should be capturing with a handycam anyways, but my handycam just bit the dust and I don't know if I want to fork the 250 dollars for a new one if I don't have to.

lol man this is quite a learning curve compared to Vegas Pro!

Should the easy set-up option "Allow for 2:3:3:2 pulldown removal" even be used in my case?

No. Here's how I set mine up, and I'm on the same version of FCP:

Easy setup: all formats> rate = 23.98fps>DV NTSC 24P (23.98)

FCP is ready to go.

Then when you connect your cam to capture>bring up the capture window>in the third tab of that window, set your capture preset to 2332 pulldown removal.

Capture footage... and if you're using "capture now", it will say in the preview window, while capturing, "capturing clip, blah blah blah... removing advanced pulldown from source"

Thanks Ryan. I really appreciate your help.

I'm gonna give this another shot here. What did you set your "use" tab to (its the third drop down list after formats and rates) Should that be set to Allow for Pulldown Removal as well?

Nope... I set mine to DV NTSC 24P (23.98).

I just checked, and once I change capture settings to "advanced pulldown...", the "use" tab sets itself to custom.

Don't have an explanation, but all my footage is correct at 23.98fps, all new sequence's default to 23.98, and everything drops right into the timeline.

Think about it this way: We're removing the pulldown during the capture itself (hence, the pulldown option in capture process, not in FCP setups). So... once the footage is captured, it's at 23.98 frames per second. The pulldown has already been removed. We just want FCP itself, and all sequence's and timeline's, to handle the 23.98 frames per second we captured. The pulldown is already removed, so now (in FCP) we're dealing with straight 23.98 footage.

I did everything you told me to do, and it still plays back twice as fast. However, when I conform the clips to 23.98 in Cinema tools it sets it back to what it should be. *sigh* I haven't dealt with this sort of problem before, but I suppose its well worth it in the end :) Thanks again for your help Ryan.
