Wondering Who It's For

It's rare that a TV show like Medium is so well done, but I have a question.

The episode I saw last night had some good life-lessons for a 9-year-old: how kids should treat each other with respect, and give even the loser kids a chance, don't follow the crowd, etc etc etc. Nicely done, not too heavy-handed.

I see little lessons like this in more than half the episodes. Heck, they got those three adorable little girls on there, plenty of opportunities to do something worthwhile with the secondary stories and such.

But what the heck? The episode last night (here) had that great guidance for a 9-year-old girl...

...and three dead, naked women in a dumpster with their eyes gouged out.

Do they expect parents to allow their kids to watch? And, if not, who are the sub-stories for?
