I think the lens flares really amped the look of Star Trek, at least for me. They're so sci-fi. I guess it's what I expected light to look like when you're flying by stars. In Super 8, I will probably agree that they're a little overused but I still like them, and didn't find them distracting. I read an article where J.J. Abrams discusses why he likes lens flares so much, and I thought he justified his position quite well: "I love the idea that the future is so bright it can't be entirely contained by the frame." -J.J.
