wonder what microsoft says now?

I hate to demonize the guy... but when he's listening to the question he looks downright evil :)

Yeah... I'm pretty sure it's safe to say the iphone is a success. If I could get one and stay on verizon I would. There are 3 types of people in the world... people who have iphones, people who want an iphone, and people who haven't tried one yet.*

*(plus a small percentage of blackberry minions).

You forgot the 5th type:

those who simply don't want one even after trying it, despite being the uber hardcore techno/computer geek.

I don't want a phone to do anything other than make/take calls with...

Basically Curlys Law:

but the ipone is a big success for sure...

in contrast Ballmer compared to apple (Jobs) has always made me uncomfortable. i just dont like this guy at all. i dont think he is competent in public when he speaks. always has a sour grapes thing going on. i cant believe he is still the guy at microsoft...but then again, no its not surprising after all...its microsoft.

he's a goofball in public and i think he's not the right image microsoft should/could be displaying. gates was a geek too and did manage to pull it off but i think times are very different with microsoft vs apple *now* then it was way back in those niave times.

here is a Ballmer classic...

need i say more.

as far as the iPhone vs other phones? i am a complete apple user except for the iPhone. for me its too big. i fall into the category that Anhar states as..."I don't want a phone to do anything other than make/take calls with..."

i do think the iphone is a bad boy though for the vast majority of people...but im not in the vast majority. i do have a 16 Touch though....games...haha!

O actually had one and gladly went back to my old phone after a few days.

As a phone I hate it, but I`m jealous because of the many cool apps.

Anhar, I'd like to add to your comment and propose a 6th type.

"Someone who just has a phone to communicate and make PHONE calls, not email, take pictures, run apps, etc. iPhone users are a bunch of technogeeks who like the latest and greatest of anything electronic and use it as a status symbol. And when I hear them gripe and complain because so and so doesn't carry their signal, or this and that app doesn't work right, I sit back and smile, because my 25.00 phone still works perfectly as it is supposed to."

Dammit, it's a cell PHONE. It's all these apps and crap that are driving rates up. Chat on your f'ing home computer, email there too. Stop making me pay more because you want to stream "Gonzo Pops Balloons with His Butt" from Youtube on your phone.

LOL, rant over.

"Someone who just has a phone to communicate and make PHONE calls,

I used to be that type for years Doc.

But now I have a cell phone, a mp3/video player, a GPS SatNav and what not.

If I want to go out I need a bag for all those gadgets plus an other one for cables and loaders-

I really like the idea of a device that does everything in one box.

1. I like a big hires display with lot´s a colors (that rules out small girly phones - gimme a mans phone dammit- I don't care how big and heavy it is)
2. Play Videos/Music (connectable to TV)
3. Surfing the Net with a REAL browser and E-mail
4. GPS Navigation
5. Terrestrial Radio and TV
6. A interface that can be used with my fat fingers
7. Long lasting batteries
8. Calender
9. Decent camera with flash for video/stills
10. Tactical looking scratch and waterproof housing.

The new Archos does most of this, but needs a hotspot for the phone function.
How lame is this?

Thing is I use to have a Pocket PC /GSM, years ago WAY WAY before the iphone, people forget that the iphone is BASICALLY those same DAMN PocketPC phones (effectively)!

and back in those 'old days, I attached GPS via bluethooth and installed TomTom (SatNav)

it had a camera as well, and I could install any damn application on it, it surfed the web, it allowed me to remote into a dektop PC/server, and do a ton of stuff +full multimedia (media player).

And yes it was touchscreen (those silly stylus pens)

Apple merely took that and made it sexy (and dumbed down, so that not so tecky people could use it)

Thats another reason why I do not like the Iphone, I've been there years ago, and these types of device try to be "Jack of all trades master of none"

But I'm not busting down on iphone users, just understand:

(a) its not as innovative as you may think (sure its executed very very well) its just a pocket PC (kinda like the Mac vs PC for the pocket world)

(b) When something tries to do everything, it usually ends up not doing very well at anything (or excel at it)

2. Play Videos/Music (connectable to TV) Get a TV and there is thing hang on.....I think it's called ra-dio, I could be wrong.
3. Surfing the Net with a REAL browser and E-mail Get a computer, for God's sake. They make em now. And replying to some email promising Better Male Enhancements or that a long lost relative in Nigeria has left you 30,000,000 dollars can usually wait until a person gets home
4. GPS Navigation. Buy and learn how to read a map. Or at the very least, know how to navigate yourself out of a bag. N,E,S,W: not all that hard.
5. Terrestrial Radio and TV. Refer to # 2
6. A interface that can be used with my fat fingers. Hard to say, Jenny Craig?
7. Long lasting batteries. Won't need them if not on it all the time doing #'s 2-3
8. Calender Okay, getting monotonous, LOL. How about, I don't know, a calendar? Day runner makes a few good ones. My insurance co. offers this itty bitty one.
9. Decent camera with flash for video/stills. Still under resolution on these. Buy a nice camera for 40 bucks and be done with it.
10. Tactical looking scratch and waterproof housing. Do you go tactical? Been doing any SWAT ops lately? Or maybe diving with your phone? I would imagine it's hard to answer your phone UNDERWATER! LOL!

The new Archos does most of this, but needs a hotspot for the phone function.

Okay well Doc, I think the point isn't getting all those things, but it's to get it in one tiny thing that you can use anywhere you want, anytime. If you carry around a calendar, portable tv, radio, a computer, etc... and on top of that you find yourself lost... well let's just say it would be a nuisance. If you can get everything in one place, well that's just darn convenient.

All I'm hearing from the anti iphone people is a modern day version of the age old "I had to walk 1 mile through the snow up a hill every day!" talk. :) ;)

Soon enough everything you've ever needed will be implanted in your brain with a HUD display, and then I'll be the one saying "in my day, phones, GPS and everything you've ever needed used to be something you carried in your hands!" Then my kids will laugh. *sigh*

Tell me when you can fit a map, calender, camera, computer, and phone into your pocket with the same ease of slipping an iPhone (or Winmo or Blackberry) in there.

I just got my first smart phone (blackberry storm) last month and I love it. It isn't for everyone of course, and I understand the appeal of have just a phone, but you cannot deny the convenience of having all that in your pocket. When I go away on weekend trips or I am away from my house for a couple days, I no longer bring my laptop with me and I love not having to deal with it.

Jon, just havin' a bit of fun. Sure, it's nice having those things, but just like calculators, don't forget how to do the real thing. You may not have that gadget later on. GPS sucks, when it don't work. So? Mapreading, anyone? Or will you sit there wondering how to get from point A to point B without a female voice saying "Turn right in .2 miles"

Ah, but when you'll get it implanted into your head you'll have the option of her voice or a HUD with arrows on the ground (real time tracking). :)

Plus when it's always in your head you won't have to worry... unless something goes wrong. Hmm, then they won't know how to read a map.

You may have a point...

But anyways, back on topic, yeah, Microsoft got it wrong. Never even heard of a "zune" whatever that is.
