Without Tiger it's just "golf".

I think Tiger's PR agency should start printing shirts with that on 'em. When you see this shirt I can date the original idea.

Seriously... all moral issues aside, I go from having a significant interest in golf to have ZERO interest when Tiger's not involved. I've got my own clubs. I par a few holes each time I play, but I'm not a golf-lover...

I'm just saying that he should probably get back in there... and I expect this all to blow over, more or less. I'll even venture a guess that after he kicks ass for a year or two he'll probably even get many of his endorsement deals back.

Pop culture is weird... because almost anything distasteful crystalizes into something cool with enough time in the right hands. I'll bet that in a year or two we'll just think of Tiger as the bad boy of golf that John Daily could have been (if he were a better golfer).

It's all B.S. though... all of it. Do you think he's sorry or do you think he's sorry he got caught? It's pretty rare that people have these personal evolutions out of the blue... the sh*t always has to hit the fan first.

Still... I hope he starts playing again soon.

I didn't watch his speech. I don't watch much golf whether he's playing or not. I played a little golf for a while, even had a house on a nice course. But you know what?

I could give a rat's ass about what Tiger does on his personal time. And the idea that he owes ANYONE an apology other than his wife for obvious reasons, and his family for the negative publicity is just preposterous.

I wish the media would get out of people's bedrooms and living rooms and get back to the business of doing whatever it is they are supposed to be doing... Which is I don't know what exactly and don't care. I haven't watched "the news" in years, and BS like this is why.

I saw some blog that stated that since his wife wasn't present at the press conference, it was clear he needs her more than she needs him. I thought to myself... right. So she won't be asking for any money in the divorce settlement then...

Agreed.

I watch the big four tournaments, I like golf (but am not good at it) and am familiar with most of the big players on the circuit but without Tiger playing I have almost no interest to watch.

He needs to get off his ass and tee it up. He is one of the greatest athletes in history and this "hiatus" he has taken is silly.

I have Zero interest in Golf sans a minor curiosity who wins a Major.

Why is this Tiger thing even news ? Who cares.

Well, I disagree on some points.

If the guy feels like he some stuff to work out, then he should focus on that. Golf is his job. If I had stuff to deal with, work would come in a distant second. He can come back whenever he's ready. The PGA will welcome him with open arms.

I don't like the way the media hounds this stuff either, and it says more about our society's need to live vicariously through b others, due to their own perceived inadequacies, than it does about a celebrity who can't keep his pecker in his pants. At the same time, when you take on sponsorships, you are entering into an agreement to represent that company or organization within certain parameters. So I do think he owes those folks an apology. Them, his wife and kids and that's it.

He doesn't owe me a thing. That being said, I am much more likely to watch golf if he is playing.

Of course, I totally kicked his ass in TW Golf on the Wii. Maybe I should get some sponsorships...

No, this hiatus is terrific. It reminds the broadcasters, advertisers, and everyone involved in the sport of golf, why he is who he is, and why they pay him what he get's paid.

When you are the best in the world at what you do, people will pay to see you. I don't care if your name is Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretsky, John McEnroe, or Mario Andretti.

Tiger plays golf, tiger gets paid. Simple as that. Media doesn't like it... screw em. If I was him, I wouldn't grant an interview for a year. Let 'em eat cake. And props to Nike for not running him up a flagpole. EA sports too.

And Jim, the only thing Tiger needs to work out is where to find a better lawyer than his wife will. The divorce laws are predatory toward men and he's going to need a REAL attorney. He'll lose a third of his assets. But if he can keep it under half, he'll be to the good.

Exactly my thoughts! People get too hung up in "Hero worship". Sure, the guy plays golf well. So? Does that mean he puts on his pants any different than any other guy? (Other than he seems to put them back on in many different hotel rooms). There are bunches of guys that are unfaithful to there wives, and visa versa. Nothing new.

Sheesh, the guy can just hit a stupid ball and people are foolish enough to pay him millions for it. Show me someone who has really made a difference for the good in this world, sacrificed things to help their fellow man, then they will have my admiration. But just because you play a game/sport well......no. I don't live my life through another.

Jim, I'll call Nike and see if I can get you that endorsement.

I guess people aren't familiar with the work the Tiger Woods Foundation does, and continues to do, in terms of providing education opportunities, grants and scholarships to kids.

http://www.tigerwoodsfoundation.org/

I can't comment on the contributions to society anyone else posting in this thread has made, but if I can make a tenth of the impact of a Tiger Woods in my community, I'll be a very happy man.

To say all Tiger Woods does is "just hit a stupid ball" is foolish and ignorant.

Tiger just did was any average young man with unlimited access to money and women would do. His mistake was bringing a wife and kids into it.

So, you are saying he does all this? Or would it be more accurate to say he has people at his foundation that do these works? Those people would have more respect from me. Sure he uses his money and put's it into a charitable organization, good. So do millions of other people. It's called a "tax break". And I highly doubt his is the only money going into the foundation.
To say all Tiger Woods does is "just hit a stupid ball" is foolish and ignorant.
And to say he formed the charity out of a purely selfless act would be naive. "Tiger Woods" is also business, not just a person.

Still not impressed. And, BTW, it's just not him, it's all "sports heroes". Overpaid, plain and simple.

No argument about the attorney, but the only person who knows what Tiger needs to work on is Tiger.

Sure, the guy plays golf well. So?

Yes and no. The guy doesn't just "play golf well". I think what inspires people about Woods (or Shaun White, Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, etc) is the result of an incredible amount of dedication, coupled with a natural ability. When a person is willing to dedicate their life to something to that degree, it sparks something in people, hence raising their expectations about that person, and giving them hope for themselves.

Jim, I agree role models are needed today, but too many people take a role model and make them a "hero". That's when things go bad because people forget that those individuals are just as human as the rest of us.

And I still don't think they should be paid like that for hitting, bouncing, catching a ball. Firefighters, Paramedics, Military, Police, now those people deserve more money. They actually risk their lives to save others. They really "put it on the line" rather than just put it in a goal, hole, etc.

I'm glad you took the time to look through that link and get to know what Tiger's foundation does.

Download the Annual Report http://www.tigerwoodsfoundation.org/file/TWF_2008_Annual_Report.pdf , stephenmick, you will see what I am talking about, I saw over 100 companies. And there is a heirarchy: Philantropic Partner, Philantropic Supporter, and Donor.

Just to be a "Donor" on the list, you have to donate $10,000 minimum. The Partner and Supporter catagories are considerably more.

So, again, he is not the sole supporter, and his contribution is minimal in comparison. He is just the figurehead. Like I said, the name "Tiger Woods" is a business. And a charity like that is BIG business. It looks like they do good things there, but he doesn't do the work (although it appears he has a member of his family on two of the Board of Directors)

That's not what he is getting paid for. Can't stress that enough. Athletes, movie stars and celebrities all get paid for the same thing:

They generate revenue for the people writing the checks.
\
Their ability to perform in their chosen profession feeds that, but never forget that Peyton Manning doesn't get millions a year because he throws touchdowns. He gets paid millions a year because people pay to SEE HIM throw touchdowns, or associate with that success in some way.

That revenue comes from us.

I agree that there is an obvious disparity between what a pro athlete gets paid versus what a cop gets paid when you boil down the actual, objective value that their jobs contribute to our society. But that's not really relevant when a city will sign a bond to finance a multi-million dollar stadium, but won't give cops or firefighters a raise.

Our actions, both as a a society and as individuals, reveal our priorities.

I think Defamer summed up my feelings pretty well...

"Speaking for the first time since his wife caved his head in with a 3-wood on November 27th for banging whores all across America, Tiger Woods held a press conference where "friends and handpicked reporters" sat quietly and were not allowed to ask questions as Tiger read something his PR people wrote. How fascinating!"

It's a tax write off.

It's a tax write off.

Yes it is. I sit on the Board of Directors of a non-profit in Colorado, and I work with quite a few others. That tax incentive does get people to donate at times.

But I would never pretend to know the motivation someone has in making a donation of time or money. I have worked with a couple of celebrity/athletes and their families in fundraising efforts. All the ones I have worked with have been genuinely dedicated to give something back to the community with their celebrity and resources. They are usually pretty humbled by the experience.
