As of today, the Head of Sony Europe confirm that the new sony 35 mm camcorder will be available at begginning of 2011, and as yesterday the same boy said they will listen customer requests, i start this thread to make a viable way to sony reps. listen to us.

But let me say some words prior ..

As a prosumer we will all for a 1 dollar, but reallistyc we cannot demand things like CCD, 120fps, and so on .. for an affordable price (maybe around 10.000$).
Even when sony, as other cam manufacturers have a full line of priced cams. So please no ask sony to down prices & up features both 50%.

Imagine a SRW-9000PL for a 10.000$ (like the fake(i think) i see on this reseller : http://lokostech.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=79 ),
well maybe, sony will sell more than 10x units of that camera if the put this price -i think sure-, well a good business but for a short time .., do you imagine Ferraris news 458 Italian selling for 10.000$, the same and the same .. in that cases, the brand name, the brand sign will dissapear in short time, this is not our world.

You cannot tell to sony that sell a X cam with the same features as a X Red cam (where on X is any cam with same features different brand) for the same price ..
We can tell sony to approach, .. to get closer to, but not to get a super radical change in 1 year.

I think that -in the bussiness world we live in-, we need to ask to advance in the correct time/steps, so..

From my point of view, i wish the following for the new affordables sony 35 mm camcorder -note affordables beacuse i think that i listen camcorderS from the sony Head man-:

  • XDCAM 50MB 4:2:2, and if possible HD CAM, but not AVCH like the one on the new pannny, and not 35mbps as its relly poor for a 35mm sense
  • DUAL HDSDI, and don't forget HDMI like on EX3, and if possible addin an USB3.0 port to transfer directly to PC (but this will down its new backup product)
  • If more than 1 model, make a semishoulder and a shoulder mount also
  • Modular Like design or do the design as the camcorder can be full fitted with a lot of cine accesories
  • 60 fps on 1920x1080P , yii sony, this will be the correct step
  • No more than 12.000$, will be the step
The last 2 i think could bring sony its sense to approach to more customers the film world (creatology its only a word).

They will be no borried about 60fps for a 35mm for a $10K, its not a crazy idea, its a good idea, let me explain ..
Someone may be said that same specs (60fps on 35mm) are on SRW and F and that cams are on a more than $50K base price .. BUT

The new afffordable can be fit with a $10K price and conserve the 35mm product line, as the others SRW and F have full pro features (SR SSD, 4:4:4, 440&880MB, CCD, and so on) -bussiness reason to be more expensive, not to mention there foces on hollywood- so .. giving the business puzzle world, the new affordable sony 35mm camcorder with the features i wish, i think could be the next step in our cineworld.

What do you wish, what do you think ?

Ummm.... we are talking about Sony here, not RED or Panasonic......
I don't think they really care about any wishlists written by people on the Internet.

First you ask us for our ideas and then you tell us to not have any ! And, if it´s true that this camera will be released early in 2011, then the window of opportunity is already past for adding input. Sorry .

Just yesterday the Sony Head said that they're listening customer feedback, customer ideas for that new camera ..

PD: Was the AF wishlist opportunity successfull ?

Thanks, goodyes. To try to obey every feature request on the Internet is an initiation to insanity (just look at the AF100 wish list thread). Sony would do well to listen, but the best designs happen when the designer listens but then uses his own best judgment and technical knowledge. Actually the best designers have often been users, who make something for themselves (like Aaton, RED, and Ikonoskop). But manufacturers whose first goal is profit, who try to keep up a complicated tier of products, and who rely on a clever marketing department, will make less interesting products.

I began making short movies 20 years ago, and have made commercials, short features, event documentaries, interviews --- you name it. My wish list, I think, is echoed by many forum posts through the years:

- shallow depth of field (but I will take 4/3 or S35)
- decent codec (but I will take anything from AVCHD to uncompressed)
- variable frame rate, up to at least 60 fps
- global shutter (if you count how many posts there are out there about "how bad is the jello?" you will see that such a feature is direly wanted)
- under $10,000. Beyond this amount and you miss the "long tail" of serious but small-time filmmakers of all stripes. As you mentioned, would you rather sell 1,000 cameras at $100,000 each or 100,000 cameras at $10,000 each?

hey mate , in the first sentence you squelched my number one feature request , i.e. 720p/120fps and I obviously don´t think it unreasonable. In fact one of my great unanwered questions is , if the 550d can do 720/60, why can´t the 7d do twice as much since it has two digics ? There ya go Sonyman, if you´re listening - 720p@120fps !

SUggestions:

Manageable picture profiles with detailed tuning, like the Panasonic HPX2700, for example
- another vote for 720 120fps

Also agree on 50mbits 4:2:2 codec. Actually, after the release of both Canon offerings, I cannot find justifiable any non 4:2:2 codec on the price range.

S35 sized sensor, opening the possibilities for both aps-c and full frame still lenses

Option for both SxS and CF recording. No proprietary Memory Stick nonsense.

completely agree

if sony keeps price near $10,000. i think there may begin price war in the lower end market. its mostly beneficial to indies to some extent. but what is the type of sensor they are going to use and its size in mm's .

Sony has given two price brackets -- initially they said $19,000 but more recently we have reports of them saying $50,000. They have said that it is not targeted at the low end, it is targeted at the Red One.

Yep. This is to be a competitor to the RED M-X (and then Epic and Scarlet, presumably) as well as the ARRI Alexa. In fact, an article I read seemed to suggest that the price would fall between that of RED M-X (currently $25,000 for body only) and the ARRI Alexa (~$60,000 was the last I heard).

I'm kind of curious to see what will happen with their CineAlta lineup with this new entry. Not really interested (or capable) of buying in at that price point, but curious to see how the market is evolving.

EDIT: Here's a link to the article I mention: LINKAGE

And the relevant quote:
Details were thin on the ground but Sony did reveal that once completed the new shooter will offer a shallow depth of field, PL mount and cost less than the Arri Alexa.
So this really doesn't seem to be shaping up as an "afforable" camera in terms of really low budget indie owners. Certainly - I seriously doubt - anywhere near $10,000. At the moment, true video cameras with larger sensor size options near that price point are pretty much nil. In the near future, we should have the AF-100 and the S35 Scarlet - one somewhat less than $10,000, the other somewhat more. There will also be the VG-10, but it doesn't quite qualify to be in the same field, to me. No doubt there will be other options from other companies aside from Panasonic and RED (Sony, Canon, etc.) but that's all just well-wishing at this point.

With the specs i post on 1st post, its no way, no possible "price less than arri" even "less than Red" ..

If you look at: http://twitter.com/CineAltaNews you find that new SRW-9000PL will be $72.000, well is high but its inside the range for its features ..

But for the affordable; if compressed codec, 50 or even at 100mbps, CMOS, and bla bla .. is not possible to be close in price to arri or red, as with that specs, need to be targeted at prosumer proentry level .. this is why i think $10-12K priced

if the price is more than $ 25000, indies are out of reach of this product and may have to rely on hpx 370 or hpx 500 to some extent or any other products which will be released in near future. wait and see what happens in near future for release price of Sony's by its team. then we can make any decisions whether go for shoot with it or not.
