Wish me luck

I've got my first paying gig tomorrow, a short (10-minute) corporate video at an Native American casino. They want a "fun home video" look, so I think that excludes 24P.

Or should I do 24P and assume they'll love it? I'll have available lighting only, so I think 60i would be better anyway. I sure don't want it to be grainy. Any thoughts?

Regardless, I hope this is a break from the long pattern of doing "labors of love."

Re: Wish me luck

cool, good luck man. the insides of casinos are cool looking, the available light might actualy be pretty neat. :D

"You'd have to be insane to shoot in a casino." - Swingers.

Hope that helps. :D

Re: Wish me luck

I'd do a White Balance off of the 42nd yellow light bulb from the marquee next to the slot.

Re: Wish me luck

cool man, maybe you can shoot some 24p and 60i and compare - show them how it looks? maybe they will love it

Re: Wish me luck

OK, so I went with 24P. :D A little grainy in spots, but I gotta say the DVX did a wonderful job in the available lighting.

As far as how it went overall, I learned a lot. We're shooting again tomorrow, more important scenes than today. The producer didn't have things planned very well, so it was a lot of spontaneous directing on my part, as well as some quick script writing and more.

Argh. Wish she had planned it better, but at least she was open to suggestions. I think it's going to turn out well!

Re: Wish me luck

just finished reviewing the second day's shoot. Man, the DVX is awesome. I used 24P! Hah, even my fiance says it looks like film. **** Yeah it does!

But now I'm having feelings and thoughts like "I'm a hack. I have no business using such a great camera. Will I ever figure this out? I'm overstepping my boundaries."

That said, I'm sure only a few if any of the 500 casino employees who will view this are going to know the difference. They're going to focus on the CONTENT, which is turning out to be pretty cool.

It's too easy for me to overlook the good, and say "Damn this could be so much better if done right." The whole time I was thinking "this should be storyboarded. I need lighting!!! Damnit a dolly would make this shot. I totally need a wireless mic setup. Ohhhh, why didn't we think this out better??"

I need some grounding. Even though I know I'm a beginner and this experience will only enhance my skills and abilities, I feel like I have to live up to some unknown standard. The DVXuser standard. Damn DVXuser.com!

Am I alone with these feelings, or is it common? Have you felt them too? Sigh. I can't wait to do it again. :)

Re: Wish me luck

I hope you never fail to listen to that unknown standard. (The internal perfectionist) When working on a piece, especially when it's your first time, you obviously want everything to be perfectly well....perfect. Sounds like things are going well and you're feeling it. Keep that energy rolling. When I'm in that zone I don't want to question it, I just want it to keep rolling until production is finished. You can feel when you have good stuff and when you've missed those golden opportunities.

Let us know when you have a rough cut. I'd be up for giving some constructive feedback. One of the great things about this forum is having people with really good eyes, especially when it comes to editing. In the old days (before DVXuser) you'd edit stuff, use your subjective judgment and then finish things. With all the gurus on this forum you're able to get good perspective to get past your bias and see the forest.

Re: Wish me luck

Thanks for the great advice and feedback, Isaac.

You're right, the energy is snowballing and I can't wait till shooting is completely done so I can edit this thing. Unfortunately, I won't be able to post anything due to contract restrictions. :( And I'd really like some professional feedback and criticism. I have a cousin nearby who used to work at an audio-visual studio who will be able to help me on this one.

Hopefully my next project is something I can share with this community, though.

Contract restrictions? You're not going to let us in on industry secrets!?!? I want to find out why I'm losing so much money to the casinos!!!!!
