wireless when doing doc style?

lets say you are shooting something like Discovery Channel's Dirty Jobs or Mytbusters. Is the Boom operator wired to the camera through his mixer, or are they using wireless? Whats the best type of set up for a doc style shoot?

The third option is the mixer is recording separately from the cam.

The best rule is to use wire unless you have no choice. It just eliminates so many potential problems.

If I were setting up for that I'd have the sound guy carry his own recorder. The lack of tethering allows things to get done much more efficiently, as long as he knows what he's doing and the occasional sync mark is given.

David, it really depends on the situation but in most situations like this
where you're doing a lot of moving from location to location and a lot of following people around its best to go wireless to the camera.

As far as using a separate recorder as well really depends on budget of the show
and if they want to deal with it in post.

A lot of reality shows these days will be wireless to the camera. The soundmixer sending
the mix to camera while recording iso's in their bag on a 744 or 788,
but there are probably just as many shows that record only to camera.

The shows that use recorders are jam sync'ed to the cameras and usually not slated on set.
