Wireless Transceiver Lavalier Test Showdown

Does anyone know what moonlitnite recorded his PR40 test with? Did he use a mixer?

I've tried connecting my PR40 directly to my DVX100b and it is very noisy...much more than my octava.

Any ideas why this would be?

Hmm, perhaps we're a bit off topic discussing the Heil PR40 on a wireless lavaliere post, but since I threw the mic in simply for comparative purposes versus the standard wireless units, I guess I'm bound to respond.

My recollection was that I went from the PR40 through a M-Audio DMP3 pre-amp, then into the Senn G2 transmitter. After receiving the RF into the G2 receiver, I used a (noisy) Alesis Multimix 12 USB to interface to my PC, running Sound Forge software.

If you're running an inefficent mic like the Heil PR40 directly into your DVX, you'll find the pre-amp in the DVX doesn't have a suitable signal/noise ratio to boost a low signal coming from an inefficient mic like the PR40. You'll find most of the audio guys here will use a good field mixer like one from Sound Design if their budget permits. If not, and you're out in the field where you can't get power to an A/C powered affordable mixer, then the Heil PR40 isn't your choice. But realistically, if we're hauling around a huge mic like the PR40, we're probably doing inside work and have access to power for a mixer. Still, let me warn you, DON'T direct connect the PR40 to a cheap, noisy mixer like the Alexis! We can't expect a $150 unit with 8 pre-amps to do a decent job amplifying a very weak signal coming from a dynamic mic like the PR40. Instead, look for a better mixer with decent pre-amps like a Mackie. True, it's (somewhat) acceptable to use an external preempt, and THEN go into a cheaper mixer using the faders without cranking up their poor S/N preeamps. Yet even with my setup, I wouldn't begin to claim a pre-amp like the M-Audio DMP3 is a strong S/N performer - but it's okay for the price and certainly matched to the fair quality audio of a camera like the DVX.

And yes, the Oktava puts out a VERY healthy level that will allow you to turn down your DVX amps (without boosting internal noise).

Hope that helps,

Michael
