Wireless Shotgun?

I'm trying to get an understanding of how boompoles and shotguns work. Is there basically a really long XLR cable connected to the mic which extends down the pole then connects to the camera?

Is there a way to connect the mic to an adapter then place a received on the camera?

Re: Wireless Shotgun?

Yes, and yes.

Normally you would use a long XLR cable.

But if you want to go wireless, you can use something called a "plug-in transmitter", which has an XLR port on it, and you can plug that directly into the boom mic.

Plug-in transmitters may or many not supply phantom power though. If you want to use one with a mic that requires phantom power, you'll have to get an external phantom power supply. Electret condenser mics usually can operate either off phantom power or off an internal battery -- those types would work easily with a plug-in transmitter.

Keep in mind the normal caveats: with wireless comes hassle. It's usually much easier to get quality sound from a $50 XLR cable than it is from a $500-$2500 wireless system...

$50 xlr.. even a $10 XLR cable can usually beat a wireless system.

But its pretty nice having no wires :)
