Well, as some of you know I had the brilliant idea after looking around for some alternative mounts and realizing they all cost over $100 for a piece of bent aluminum, I decided to screw it and go buy the tools to do it myself. After spending money on milling machines and saws and other tools I soon realized I could of bought a bag full of those $100 mounts. Oh well.

Anyways, here is my first attemt:

Re: Wireless reciever/Quicktream Mount

What a start. And look at all the new toys - I mean tools. Gosh, the number of times I wanted to make a simple something, and and spent a fortune at the machine shop.

Re: Wireless reciever/Quicktream Mount

Jarred it looks great! I think that would work for my Sennheisser? Never thought about going under it. How does that work with rods? How did you coat it? Paint or what? 8)

Re: Wireless reciever/Quicktream Mount

yeah I decided to go under, because its the only spot where it wouldnt get in the way of anything. it would work no problem with rods, as you put the rods between the plate and the camera, easiest way to look at it is that to imagine the little box as a tripod riser, but will work handheld etc.

I coated it with this wierd powder coat looking matte stuff that leaves a little texture.. dont know how durable it is, but it will have to do until I find out where to buy battery acid to start annodizing.

Re: Wireless reciever/Quicktream Mount

Does your receiver have antennas? Wouldnt they get in the way with it being underneath the camera? Can you still mount your camera on a tripod if you needed to as well?

Re: Wireless reciever/Quicktream Mount

Going underneath is a great idea. You could even stack them, or go sideways and make room for more stuff.

Re: Wireless reciever/Quicktream Mount

yes you can put it on a tripod, I screw my bogen qr plate right onto it. For wireless recievers, you can push the reciver back enough so the antennas pop up past the back, as there are tons of mounting holes (cheese plate idea) . You could even mount a reciever sideways and have the antennas come up the sides.

There really was no better way to put it, besides not getting in the way, going on the bottom also keeps the balance level, so you dont have an off balance setup. The stuff is 6061 aluminum and strong as hell, so the camera weight is not an issue.

Re: Wireless reciever/Quicktream Mount

very nice!

Jarred maybe you can make a recommendation. I'm looking for a metal shaping tool that can bend an aluminum rod (rectangular cross-section) in a perfect circle of a specific diameter. What I'm trying to do is create a collar for the barrel of my anamorphic lens.

Long story short: the hole of my set screw on the lens is wearing down. It's funny because when I purchased the lens the vendor actually warned me about this problem, so I've been extra careful not to overtighten when installing and uninstalling the lens. Alas, my efforts have been fruitless. Unfortunately, panasonic has been unavailable for comment and the only response I've received from them included instructions on proper mounting. Anyway, I got the idea to put a thin aluminum collar around the barrel of the lens and have the set screw (a newer, longer screw) go through it and into the original hole. The metal collar would provide the necessary metallic threading to keep the set screw from slipping (unlike the current plastic threading provided by the barrel).

Initially I thought about re-threading the existing hole to a larger screw and be done with it. However, since the material I'm threading is so much softer than the screw. I must expect that this problem will continue to happen.

Anyway any suggestions are welcome.

Interestingly enough Panasonic did a decent job of locking down the OEM hood. I wonder why they didn't approach the lock down mechanism for the Ana lens in the same way. Who knows, maybe the hood was designed by Leica?

Re: Wireless reciever/Quicktream Mount

I dont know if the color would work.. you could retap the screw hole with a larger diameter though and use a larger screw. man i hate that thing with a passion.

Re: Wireless reciever/Quicktream Mount

I just got done looking at some mounts for wireless recievers on the B&H website. My concern is that I have my tripod plate attached to the camera at all times so when I need to use the tripod I just slide the plate into the grooves and lock it in place. If I want to add a mounting bracket for a wireless receiver even though they say you can still attach your camera to the tripod, how can you? Should I take my Cartoni plate off the camera and attach it back to the tripod then attach the wireless bracket to the camera instead? If so I would still have to screw that into the plate on the tripod!

There has to be a better solution.

Re: Wireless reciever/Quicktream Mount

yeah DVX100... that is why I made this mount.. the mount goes between the camera and the QR plate.. so you can use it off and on the tripod. Look:

Re: Wireless reciever/Quicktream Mount

Jarred are there holes in the front so you could put an anttana thru it? 8)

Re: Wireless reciever/Quicktream Mount

Now to get it set back a bit to accommodate the Cavision rods and bellows hood. Conceptually it is similar to Videosmith's auxiliary box for the Rover.

Re: Wireless reciever/Quicktream Mount

yeah... its is my prototype.. first thing I made on the mill :) Already have some improvements to make but all in all its pretty cool.

Re: Wireless reciever/Quicktream Mount

Jarred,
Do you have any recommendations for a commercial mount I can purchase which will let me mount the Quickstream under a DVX100A like you did?

Thanks,
Peter

BTW- nice work, forging new grounds here. Maybe you could produce and sell some... ;D
